Getting rid of free plastic bags in shops? Isnt this just an excuse to charge?

We hear in the UK that shops are getting rid of free plastic bags in an attempt to cut down on packaging and rubish, but isnt it just an excuse to charge us more? If it was environmental concerns, surely plastic bags would just be banned?

I've thought about that several times myself. The supermarkets still have plastic bags and if we pay 5 cents for each bag we can get them. So if we pay they're not bad for the environment anymore? I know that having to pay might deter some people from using the plastic bags but not everyone, so I sometimes wonder.. hmmm maybe it really is just so they can charge for them ...

...and HOW MANY OF US DRIVE IN CARS to the supermarket? If anyone was really bothered about the environment it would be the car driver we would be encouraging off the road not the plastic bag user blessed be

I think it is to discourage the usage of plastics they are charging.A complete ban is not possible i think.

If plastic bags were banned entirely then what would we use? Paper bags are fine for most things, but not everything. Maybe it's a way to charge more, but it's also a way to cut down on waste. Either people will purchase durable canvas bags or the like, or they will use fewer plastic bags. I'm not in favor of charging for bags, but I do think they are a colossal waste. When I go shopping, there is usually a bagger there, and I sometimes end up with 10 or 12 bags, when 8 or 8 would have been plenty. Those 4 extra bags each week, times millions of shoppers, really add up. People would think twice about using so many if they cost money. I reuse the bags in my small wastebaskets, but I have enough to last me a long, long time even if I never get another one. Plus, I've seen people just throw them away- such a waste!

i like the idea of not providing the costumer with plastic bags but of course they should provide something else in exchange of that.it is a hassle for someone like me who usually forget to bring my own plastic and force to have a plastic bag for a fee.and the result is more plastic at home and the worst i have to pay for them which i usually get for free!yeah i think this is marketing strategy for some supermarkets to earn more :(
