How do you persuade a child that music practice is important?

My son was desperate to start music lessons & his teacher says he's got some talent is doing really well. But I cannot get him to sit his butt down and do any practice. I could force him, but I have a feeling that this may put him off learning music for ever which is the last thing I want. I want him to enjoy it, but he'll not improve unless he practices. Seriously, I'd be happy with 5 minutes! How do other parents tackle this issue?

You need to tell him that having music lessons cost money and that if he isn't willing to practice outside of the practices from the music teacher than you aren't gonna continue to pay for him to keep going. kids really don't understand the concept of money and really think it's not a big deal. you need to make him realize that it does cost money and that he needs to make a choice on whether to take it seriously or to quit altogether. good luck and keep us posted. God bless

The money thing is an issue as well, but it's not my primary one really. I want him to enjoy the lessons more than anything else. In the last when I've used money as part of my argument he's just used it back to me & told me I can save money when he doesn't want to go. He doesn't understand yet that it's not that easy!!

if your son is desperate to start a music lesson, then it is not hard to motivate him. you just have to talk to him and make him realize that he wanted that music lesson, he initiated it, and there's only one way to be good at it. it is to constantly practice what you know. you can even cite some examples. like famous artist. you can also say that his teacher sees the talent in him and that talent will be wasted if your son will not enhance that talent.

Music can come through the worldbounder. It can connect people speaking different language. So music is a talent. If you aren't interested in it, practicing can not play ,too.

Oh he's interested OK Hopebird. He loves his lessons & really looks forward to them. And according to his teacher he shows some talent too. But gettng him to practice in between lessons is just SOOOOOoooo hard! I think he needs ever session to be a one on one.
