I do a econ unit with my students and I start out by asking what they think of rich people. The most popular answer is that rich people are greedy and mean. Once the unit is over is it my hope that they understand rich people are only poor people who did something, change their habits and stopped making excuses. Can you imagine how many charitable organizations are started by rich people? Hmm. How many of those organizations are started by poor people? In reality, who is really the greedy, selfish people in our society?

I actually teach at an elementary school at the fifth grade level. The econ unit I am doing rides along with the events of the Thirteen colonies as well as math, writing and other subjects. Least to say I bite at bit all year to get to it becuase it is so interesting to me to see the student start their businesses and expand the colony (just wait until they see what happens when we start pushing over the mountains!). Teaching has to be multi dimensional. Gone are the days, to me anyway, of piles of dittos and boring lectures.
That is amazing how these rich people helped you out! I do know a couple of rich people and have thought about inviting them in.
Would you like to be rich one day? Do you have a plan to do it?

Are you a highschool or college teacher? I think what you do is awesome! Thank you for your insight. Sidenote have you ever thought of asking a wealthy person in your community to come in and speak to the students? I was pleasantly surprised when I had a flat tire in front of this BEAUTIFUL home and the occupents not only come out to help they fell all over themselves offering refreshment and for us to come in out of the heat! It amazed me and I later found they were average people who had lived check to check for years then discovered a new way to build a lawnmower. They patented it and now employ a few hundred people.

I love hearing that to many teachers I have seen want to do the "job" and go home. I kinda understand it is hard for them too. I would love to be rich and I have had all kinds of ideas for business or inventions. Alas though I have had five children at home and sometimes life has gotten in the way of dreams. Although I truly believe there is a way out of povery to wealth and I am on a mission to find it! Any tips?

I tend to think it's sour grapes and plain jealousy on the part of people when they bad-mouthed someone who has "made it" and are wealthy. It might have taken them many many years to achieve that wealth and/or fame, for as they say, there really is no such this as overnight success. Look at actors for instance...to most all of a sudden a particular actor is "hot" and gets role after role and it seems that actor "made it" overnight...when the reality is, is that the person may have been struggling years and years to reach that point. I applaud anyone who makes it...especially if they came from hard or abusive backgrounds (someone like Oprah Winfrey). Heck to be honest, I'm envisioning myself as being successful and rich...LOL

I also can't stand hearing people belly ache if say there is one of those super powerball lotteries and only ONE person wins...wow..talk about sour grapes...people grumble saying, oh that's too much money for one person to win...uh, wasn't that the reason THEY were trying the lottery?
Yeah, just where do we sign up..hehe

I know right? Like the guy my husband works for he has a lot of money but is the nicest person and has done lots for our family. But if you listen to people around here is is a backstabber and will steal your land! Crazy stuff! If he were that way I doubt he would take care of his farm hands at all.
As far as being rich? Where do I sign up?

Many of those rich people got that way through not wasting their money and for someone who has a hard time resisting spending on junk, I rather want to learn how they do it. I was thinking of this the other day, when I was helping my husband fix up the basement, and the two by four fell and scrapped my knee putting a hole in my slacks. Now normally I would want to throw them away, but I just mended them, and I was thinking the reason there is this rich lady is when she got a tear in her dress, skirt, or slacks, she did not just take them down to Goodwill and give them away, she took out her needle and thread and patched up the hole.
I also learned that the rich people do not buy a car every year, they keep the car until it can no longer run. So those who are jealous are unwilling to take the steps to become wealthier.

I know what you mean. My husbands boss and his wife have this beautiful home and by all reports they have millions in the bank. I went to her home to help her clean one day and was blown away that all her cleaning suplies were dollar store brand! I was thinking what?! Quarter of a million dollar home with black marble bathrooms cleaned with always save cleaner. I still have to have my pine-sol, but Im broke most of the time. What does that tell you? lol

I know what you mean! I have nothing but respect for rich people, I mean, more times than not they had to work so hard for their money! I do think a lot of time it is jealousy, maybe not always, but I tend to believe that it is most the time! I agree, I'd like to learn from them as well. I have always dreamt of being a rich and famous singer/entertainer, so I especially look up to the entertainers, but I do think it's great no matter how someone makes their millions. It definitely takes some sort of talent or committment to get to that level!

I do not hate rich peoples like Donald Trump or Bill Gates but I really hate some of my customers who are very rich. I hate them because they are very rich yet they still want discounts when purchasing things as cheap as $20 per item and they only buy just one item.
Imagine having to hear them complain about you not giving them discounts all the time and you see them drive luxurious cars and their clothings are all branded items.
Sometimes I wonder if they are plain stingy or are they like empty cans, luxurious appearance on the outside but are as poor as beggars in the inside.

Or maybe they buy nothing unless they get a discount? Including the fancy cars? I have read that some have made their fortunes in just this manner. Just a question.

I am from a rich family, as I said in a previous discussion, however, my father always taught me to be humble and not flaunt ny wealth. Heck he even told me make my own money if I want to buy membership for an online game (that's why I'm here lol). AS a result, hardly anyone in my new school, only my closest friends, know that I am from a rich family. The teachers just think I'm a regular guy.
The other day, one of them was teaching us about marxism. She said that she believes that rich people did no work to get there, that poor people work their butts off and the rich get the profits. She then went on to say a lot of lies about rich people and that just got me wondering... if she knew how hard my family had to work, where they came from, and what they went through, much worse than she could imagine, maybe she would just shut up and go home...
It annoyed me so much that she was trying to educate people and was misleading them into thinking that rich people are basically evil...
It is people like her who instill the jelousy in the hearts of younger youth, making them behave irrationally when they grow up..

Really?! Wow never would have thought a teacher could be so dumb! I always love the ones who think because some have a lot they should share it. I wonder why should they? They earned it or learned how to keep it if they inherited it. So I say let them keep all of it if they want! Bravo to your father!
(I have read though that almost all wealthy people givce at least ten % of their money to charity or to their church.)

Yeah they are just jealous because they cannot make it. For me, jealousy is not the word but envy with admiration. These people really work hard to achieve great success. I really want to know their secrets and learn from them. Who knows might just struck it rich. he he

Successful people will always have admirers and haters. I don't hate rich people, like you I'd like to learn from them, just because I can't be like them doesn't give me the right to hate them. I don't think they really care anyway.

I don't like to hate anybbody unless they done something bad about me. In fact I admire some of them . They made that far because of working so hard. They just deserved it.
