I woke up thinking about this, why do so many kids nowdays have allergies. Is it because they aren't exposed to different things? I grew up outside-playing in the dirt,my daddy smoked so did everyone else, playing with dogs.My kids grew up the same,I don't have any allergies, they don't either. The only time we went to the doc besides regular check-ups is if we were sick and that wasn't often. My kids the same.My oldest son has a little boy and that kid is sick it seems all the time. With allergies.Isn't it like taking a flu shot,it exposes you to it and you don't get it.

I think more people are aware of allergies and posting about them. My allergies are genetic, as my mother and grandmother had to avoid eating certain foods. When my grandmother was alive people didn't talk about allergies, as you just didn't eat the food that didn't agree with your body. One problem is all the additives in foods in the grocery store. This wasn't a problem when I was a child as we grew and bartered with our neighbors all of our food. I wish this was still an option, but we now live in the city. Another problem is the water. On the news just a few days ago we learned what is really in our water. It sure made me not want to drink the tap water.

I've often thought of this also. I had alot of sore throats but by the time I was 4, out they came along with the adnoids. I rarely went to the dr. once this surgery was done. Only get a cold today about once every 8 yrs. and never have a sore throat. Our youngest daughter had allergies, as we did the tests. She outgrew many and since living in a warmer and drier climate, she has improved. However, her son has loads of allergies. He's not old enough to be tested just yet. I think air pollution has alot to do with allergies and I also think gas heat can worsen the effects of allergies or sinus problems. This is strictly my opinion as I haven't done any research on any of the above. I'm just a mom and grandma with an opinion via observation.

Today our world is full of poluntants that were not in the air when were raising out kids. Our food is full of additives and the meats with antibiotics That we did with out. You find chemicals inn the home construction and the furniture. We wear it, sleep on it. We clean with chemicals You just can't get totally away from them. Milk is thought to be a culprit by some scientists but milk is pushed on us as the best food because of calcium. You might tey giving your grandson a teaspoon of raw honey from you area. You can get it at the health food store if you can't find a bee keeper there where you live. This web site tell about how honey can heal the body. http://www.reallyrawhoney.com/healthfacts.php

I'm another one who grew up in the dirt, playing with animals, was never expected to wash my hands after playing with the animals (I mean come on, they're family, why wash your hands after touching family members) we used to spend a lot of time on farms and would play on the muck heap and throw horse poo at each other. I'm only allergic to the pink dye they use in salmon. but my parents did smoke, and all my life I've been prone to severe ear infections, and to chest infections, and I'm sure this has a lot to do with it. so animals and less than perfectly clean houses, and playing in the dirt is good for children. smoking around them isn't.

Yeah, I totally agree with that.Even I grew up playing in the dirt and I remember, once I even had boils in my feet because of that. When I was a child, we had little restriction on what we ate and all these things developed our immune system more faster than the kids now a days.

I think I agree with you that more kids these days seem to have allergies. It could be due to some of the chemicals we are exposed to in our food and environment. I agree that if kids got exposure to different bugs in their day to day lives they would build up resistance to different illnesses, but I don't think that it would protect them from allergies specifically. In today's world we try & keep our kitchens and home scrupulously clean & protect kids from germs. Within reason, I don't think a few germs or a bit of dirt does otherwise healthy kids any harm.
