Getting the Needle!

Ok I have been very remiss and not starting any discussions for the last few weeks! The reason is simple I had a very busy week last week and was extremely tired, then I had fallen behind in answering my friends discussions so i wanted to catch up on that before I started any of my own! As most of you know I have chronic back problems despite back surgery almost a year ago! Last Monday I had a Therapeutic Lumbar Epidural and steroid injection . In my naivety I went along to hospital expecting to have the procedure done and go home! Because I was numb from the chest down it was well after 8 at night before I was allowed home, after the feeling in my legs returned! I will say now that I was pain free for the first time in 2 years and if that is the only relief I can ever get it was well worth while! The pain has been building up day by day but is still an improvement on what it was before! Last Friday I had my first Acupuncture appointment in hospital, the needles were only left in 10 minutes then but today and for the appointments every Friday morning they will be left in for at least 20 minutes, the theory is that the acupuncture needles will stop the pain messages from my leg and back travelling to my brain! They reckon it will take 4 sessions before I feel the benefit. I have also started seeing a specialist physiotherapist although I am allowed to do 2 tiny exercises it is minimal and I am not allowed to overdo it even if I have a good day! So after 8 months of pain, misery and despair I am getting lots of help from the Pain Clinic and my Dr who is one of the anesthetists in charge! I told my Dr today that if I got no more pain relief than those few painfree days It would be worthwhile and she has assured me that although I may never get rid of the pain they are sure they will get me more relief and that they have plenty more tricks up their sleeve! My questions to you is have you ever had an epidural as a pain management treatment, have you ever had acupunture and was it effective and have you ever been involved in a pain management clinic? xxx

My doctor is wonderful sweety and so easy to talk to! After feeling there was no hope and abandoned by the medical profession for so long it is great to have someone supporting you in that way! I'm afraid the pain is heading back to the level it was at before but at least I feel better emotionally and mentally! Hugs honey xxx

acupuncture - I'd love to have this done to me in hopes to help with my pain as well as my hubby's
My husband had surgery one time and tried the epidural way and he said never again because he didn't like not being able to feel his legs one bit. lol He's now involved with the pain management but so far he hasn't found anything that works for him. Eventually maybe but not yet. My parents have had needleless acupuncture with their chiropractor and they love it and want to continue it in the new town that they moved to. Hope you find some relief too!

He had surgery done under epidural cats? I don't know if i would have liked that - I was quite happy to be knocked out for my surgery! lol It is a weird feeling when you are numb , in my case, from the chest down! I do hope that we can both find the right thing for relief, my doctor is determined that she will help me although it could take a long time to find the thing that will help me best! I have heard of needleless acupuncture , doesn't it work through some kind of air blasts or something? xxxx

He sure did! I can't remember what kind of surgery it was but yeah he had that done and he didn't like it one bit. The needleless acupuncture was done on my mom's back with the doctor's fingers and hands. It was pretty neat to watch him do it. He did it to me one time and it does help a great deal. I'd love to do it again but he's so far away, up north 4 hours drive, where my parents used to live at.

Awww bless your poor hubby! Wow that sounds amazing, did he have to dig his fingers right in for it to be effective - I had heard of an air pressure technique but never this type! xxx

My answer is yes and no.. lol. I had a spinal when i had my last c section.. I can't say as that was fun at all.. It is a REALLY weird feeling not being able to move your legs isn't it ? I was trying and trying and i couldnt even wiggle my toes. I am getting this done in a nother 6 days.. oh joyous occassion! I am glad that you are getting the help you need to manage your pain! It really sucks to be in pain, i have been in pain the last couple months myself, but i can't imagine to be in pain as long as you have.. What exactly caused your pain or would you rather not share that with the public ? (I may have asked already but i have a crappy memory!!)

I agree it is a really weird feeling! i had to lie on my side to make sure it 'spread' properly and when I was finally allowed to lie on my back I was convinced one buttock was a LOT bigger than the other - I had to feel with my hand to make sure both sides were on the bed - honest! lol I had an epidural when I was in labour with my youngest but it didn't work , not sure whether it wwasn't administered properly or just not done properly so it was a bit of a shock to get that feeling this time! lol I can't believe it is only 6 days til we get a baby sissy! I don't mind sharing sweets but we aren't too sure what happened but it was a year from onset til my surgery and the nerves were badly damaged too! I guess I am just unlucky - the consultant told me it was like 2 neighbours getting the same washing machine at the same time and using it the very same , one may break down and the other will work for many years - my back broke down and all they can do is try to fix it! Hugs sweety xxx

First Darling Let me tell you how happy it makes me to hear that you are having an easier time of it. It has made me a bit misty knowing what you have endured and knowing you've some relief. I have had a few epidurals I have had 4 c-section deliveries and tumors removed 2 times and a hysterectomy so they were necessary. I've not had acupunture. I've been to 3 different pain clinics. It became to difficult to make the travel when it wasn't helping that much. It was just too hard to ride in a car 2+ hours each way for an appointment of less then an hour and go away the same as when I got there. I'm very happy for you Love oxxoxoxoxo

Thank you Mom for your support now an devery time I have needed it! i am very lucky in that my pain clinic is based in 2 hospitals , our local one where I have my ordinary appts and physio, that hospital isn't even 5 mins away and the hospital in the next town where the accupunture sessions are and where i had th epidural - that one is about 20 minutes away! I don't think I would manage a 2 hour journey, in fact I know I wouldn't! I am so pleased that you are so improved and also quite optimmistic now about my own future! Love and Hugs Mom! xxxx

I just had back surgery in November of last year, but I am doing so much better since then. Prior to that, I have had multiple ESIs (epidural steroid injections) and trigger point injections in multiple different locations on my body. Most of those were only bothersome for a day after receiving them, but they never gave me any long term benefit. They put me out for the most part to give those injections although it wasn't quite asleep. Just made to be a little loopy so you aren't really paying attention to what they are doing. I've also had injections in my facet joints. I had 5 of these injections on each side of my spine and those were extremely painful. Of course, the pain management doctor I was going to for those seemed to like to cause pain in the attempt to achieve pain management for the originating problem. They didn't give me anything to take and I felt every single one of the 10 needle sticks each time I went. I had 5 facet joints done at a time and each joint required one needle for the local and another needle right along side that with the cortisone. Thus 10 needle sticks. A week later, I went back and got the other side done. Through yet ANOTHER pain management clinic, we opted for something called radio frequency lesioning. I had to remain awake for this procedure because I had to let them know if they had the nerve right. They, at least, let me have valium before the procedure. This was intended to block nerve conduction semi-permanently. She thought I would get two years out of it, but I didn't. I got maybe 6 months, but at that time, it was the best 6 months I had in a very long time. In between these various treatments spread out over 5 years, I have had acupuncture done as well. My primary care doctor performs this in his office so I only have to pay my regular co-pay for an office visit. We attempted acupuncture to alleviate the pain in my back (since I had never had it done before). The first time, the really fine needles were inserted it hurt me pretty badly, but that's because my muscles had become toxic with my limited mobility, the pain itself and all the medication I was taking. After the first treatment, although it did not alleviate my pain, I was very relaxed; which I had not been in a while either. The second time I returned, there was no pain on the needle insertion since I had been having regular massages for my muscles. Prior to my actual surgery, the orthopedic surgeon wanted me to have a discogram done. I don't know if you have ever had one of these done before, but luckily they gave me somethingthat left me really loopy so I didn't really feel much pain except for the pain that I was supposed to feel. Before the surgeon would agree to remove a disc, he wanted to make sure that he would be removing the correct one and based on my reaction to them inserting dye and some other liquid into a certain disc, that would determine whether we had the right one or not. We did have the right one so it was removed. It was actually leaking when we did the test and the CT scan afterwards. I'm sorry to hear that surgery has left you with lingering pain. I tried everything possible to avoid having the surgery because I had heard stories of people being worse or no better afterwards, but I just couldn't take it anymore. If they have truly found something that provides you even a small amount of relief then I hope that it's something that they can provide for you as needed without the silly restrictions of ESIs.

OMG michelyn I really feel for you! I didn't have a discogram done - they managed to get the right disc via an MRI scan thankfully! My disc had totally ruptured too and they reckon that the stuff inside acts like acid on the coating of the nerves - that is why the nerve damage is so bad! I tried many things before surgery, I had tens machines, acupuncture, traction all sorts but non of them nor any amount of heavy duty painkilles helped! I knew I had to give surgery a go as there was a good chance I would end up in a wheelchair without it! I am sorry that you went through so much for so long - I know what a devastating effect it has had on my life over 2 years, 5 years of it must have been horrendous! i am very glad that you have had success with your surgery - I am still waiting to hear if the surgeon thinks it would be worthwhile performing further surgery or whether it would only cause more problems! My MRI showed that my spine is totally straight and I have a bulging disc but at least this time the disc isn't ruptured! Thank you for sharing all of this , it is really good for me to talk to someone who understands what the pain and mobility problems are truly like! xxx

I have never had an epidural but it sounds like it has helped you at least a little bit. It is good that you found a good place to get pain management. Hopefully things will start going better for you. Here is to many pain-free days!!!
