Death and kids

As adults most of us have hard time understanding the facts of life I personaly have issues with death. Last night we watched King Kong and my 4 year old cried for 30 min at the end because King Kong died. I noticed that I have never explained to him about death and what he must know is from tv or games (not video games but when they play fighting). How do you explain death to kids? Do you do it when someone dies or have a talk before that? What is the right age to have a talk and explain? I am afraid to do it because of my fear of death I might say something wrong.
