I'd like some help/suggestions/advice from all my lovely friends and soon to be friends here in mylot land. My 6 year old daughter Niamh has always been prone to UTI's since she was a baby, she has had a kidney scan and all is okay though she will most likely need another scan in the next few years just to ensure that things have not deteriorated! Anyway the other night the poor little lamb could not sleep as she was so sore and red down below and typically we had ran out of Sudocreme which is great for soothing! We got her an appt at the health centre the next morning and there was blood and protein in her urine but the are awaiting test results to make sure it is an infection but as she is not ill as she usually gets with a uti they think it could just be a bad case of thrush caused by the antibiotics she had to take at the beginning of the year to cure an ear infection! We decided not to start her on antibiotics as she is allergic to penicillin and we don't want her getting immune to other alternatives unneccesarily!
It breaks my heart that she has to go through this again , she has been given cream to treat thrush and it is helping but I would love to be able to cut all these episodes out but I am at a loss! She always wears cotton panties, avoid tight clothing, she drinks lots of water and also cranberry juice what else can I do? Any advice would be helpful. Do any of you guys know someone this young who goes through all this, did anything help prevent it with them? xxx

I get lots of UTI's, too, and have all my life. I'm 31 now. One thing that helps is sleeping with no panties, so you can get "air up there". Blueberry is another anti- UTI juice. My doctor told me to drink it 8 ounces per day, as I stand cranberry juice at all. I hope that daughter get better soon!!

cripfemme I am so sorry to hear that you have suffered for so long with uti's - I know how unpleasant they are and how badly they can affect you, Niamh has ended up in hospital with dehydration due to uti's several times despite our best efforts! Thank you so much for your advice and I will give it a try! I think blueberry juice is becoming more available here now and i will look out for it when I go shopping tonight! Hope you stay well xxxx

I went to an accupuncturist and was told to get xylitol. It is a powdered sweetner made from fruit. Any way, he told me to take a teaspoon mixed in water several times per day. The xylitol carries bad bacterial from your urinary tract. I have had a lot of problems in the past and found it works great. I think it would help bacteria in her mouth also.
I believe Thrush is an immune system problem. Antibiotics knock down the immune system. I have had all such problems and now I am on good vitamins and liver formula. Lots of Vitamin C. These have nearly gone. The liver formula helps balance the bodies ph. I believe this to be big issue for me. I hope this helps. Poor Baby is right! It is no fun. www.getgreenforloveofthehorse.com for best vitamin and immune formulas I have ever used.

Thank you so much for all of that advice and the link shell, I really do appreciate it! I will speak to her doctor about trying these - I can't put her straight on to them as she does have several allergies and sensitivities so we have to be careful! I will investigate!
Can I just say it is very nice to meet you and Welcome to the Mylot Community - I hope you enjoy it here as much as I do! xxx

Oh mummymo YES! I know what will help your little one! Thanks to OreoCookie3, she told me how to rid of this thrush and to do it every day. One is to drink buttermilk. Not a whole lot of it because, to me, it tastes nasty. But it has the ingrediants to kill the thrush. Thrush is extremely painful! I have it every now and then from taking antibiotics myself. I get it in my mouth and tongue and it's like someone set me on fire! Another thing you could do is get her to eat Dannon yogurt. It's the only brand that has the active cultures that will kill thrush. So you have two things, buttermilk and yogurt. Also, you could get the plain Dannon yogurt and put it on her private area which is very soothing as well. Gosh the poor little one! I'm feeling some king of bad for her! Bless her sweet little heart!

Oh Cats sweety now I remember you did a post on oral thrush not so long ago - I do hope you don't think I was using your ideas? I never thought that you could treat it the same was as the oral type!
She had a cream prescribed for her at the moment but I think the Dannon is a great idea both for soothing and for eating! If I cut up a lot of fresh fruit and mixed it with the yoghurt I am sure she would eat it! Not sure about the buttermilk as I know she has a sensitivity to milk and she comes out in blotches if she drinks more than a glass a day and not sure if she would be the same with buttermilk! Thank you so much for these ideas though Cats as I am sure the yogurt will be great! We will find out on Thursday morning if she has to go back on antibiotic, I am praying real hard she won't! Hugs sweety! xxx

LOL You didn't confuse me honey - I confuse myself all the time! lol I just thought I would cut fresh fruit and add the plain yogurt for her to eat as she prefers her fresh fruit to the yogurts that already have fruit in them! Thanks for clarifying although I was looking forward to rubbing bananas and melons into her backside! lol Spoilsport! xxx

Oh she wouldn't have to have much of the buttermilk, just a couple of tablespoons would be enough. That's all I did and it worked like a charm!
As for the Dannon yogurt, use only plain Dannon yogurt on her behind, not to eat and there's no need to add fruit. You could get the one with fruit in it to eat. Get only the one that has the fruit that she likes and she'd only need a couple of tablespoons of it too to help her. I hope I made that more clear for you. Didn't mean to confuse ya! Plain for her behind and fruit one to eat. Got it?

I´ve had the same problem as your poor little daughter since I was eighteen. I feel really sorry for her as I can imagine what she´s going through.
I´ve taken that many antibiotics that none of them work for me anymore. The only thing they helps me are homeopatic remedies. It´s best to go and see a specialist to get a proper treatment. I could recommend you something I´m taking, but this doesn´t mean it´s going to work for Niamh. A specialist would take into consideration age, intensity of the symptoms and what´s most important the personality of the person he´s treating.
The good thing is that homoeopathy isn´t harmful and has no side effects.
Hope this helps. A big kiss to your little girl.

Aww Dana I know how terrible this is and how horrible it must have been for you! Niamh is allergic to penicillin and that family of antibiotics so I do try to avoid taking them unless absolutely necessary as I don't want her to become immune to any!
I will have to look into homeopathy and whether we have any practitioners here! Thank you sweetheart and huge hugs from Niamh and Ixxxx
ps I do hope you are ok sweety - it is really good to see you! xxxx

Sorry to hear how much little Niamh is suffering, my dear friend. I wasn't sure what might be used in the herbal line, so I've been doing some research, and came up with Cornsilk and Parsley Tincture. If you go to the following link, and scroll to the bottom of the page, you will find a paragraph headed "For Kids". I think you might find that quite interesting, and I've also checked whether a tincture can be bought online. However, to ensure you get the right strength for Niamh's age, I would try a local Health Food Shop, like Holland & Barrett. I think that would be safer, although this tincture should not harm her in any way.. it's perfectly natural. Still, when it's kids, I always like to make doubly sure. They have experts in most of the good health food shops.
Anyway, have a read through the paragraph and see what you think.

I hope this will be of some help to you, and of course, Niamh. It hurts so to see one so small in pain. Brightest Blessings, and a big (((HUGGG))) for Niamh. xxxxx

No need for thanks, my friend. It's so distressing to see little ones in pain, especially knowing that there will be a "next time". Yes, having it handy for next time would help, but I think you can use it as a preventative too? You can always give the "tea" a try, as well. Anyway, you know best, so I'll leave you to digest what's in there.
You have a little treasure there, my dear friend... she's such a sweetie. Brightest Blessings. xxxxx

Darkwing sweety how can I thank you enough for all this information and advice? I have to say this all sounds really interesting! Things are starting to calm down now with the cream prescribed but I will bookmark those pages for next time - it is just a shame that I know there will be a next time! xxx

Poor dear little Niamh. 6 is just too little for this to be happening. I'd be checking with your local hospital. Contact paediatrics and speak to one of the paediatric sisters or nurses. I find that they are more sympathetic and have more answers because they actually THINk through the problem which a doctor mostly won't do. They are too busy!
I think I read somewhere recently that drinking alka selter will make the symptoms go away almost immediately but I cannot be 100% positive on that. Good luck Morag and a cuddly loving hug to my little mate...Hi Niamh....waving to you sweetypie.

She is waving back honey and says to say hi! She is grinning wide enough to show you where her 2 top front teeth used to be! lol Thanks for your advice and support sweety! We had a follow up appt with Sister this morning and it turns out that the cultures showed no growths so it wasn't a UTI! They are going to analyse another sample next week and if the results are the same they are going to do more investigations! She has had a kidney scan a couple of years ago and although not perfect it wasn't bad I will let you know how things go honey! Thanks again! xxxx

Hi mummymo,
I'm sorry to hear that Niamh is under the weather again. She's really been through a lot for one so young. I'm glad to hear that you've got a good cream that's working. I was going to suggest a Zincoxide cream, as those can also be very effective. It sounds like you're doing everything possible to ensure a quick recovery. I wish we lived closer, as the little girl I babysit is six too, and I'm sure they'd have fun playing together.
I trust you're doing well after your treatment, and that it'll continue to work for you. Take care. xxx

Hi Sweetheart, did you have a good break away? Niamh is doing a lot better after using her prescribed cream so i am hopeful it isn't a UTI although we will find out for sure on Thursday. Thanks for your vote of confidence! I am sure that Niamh and the little girl you babysit would get on like a house on fire, they would be chattering and giggling non stop! niamh would give make up demonstrations in one breath and be putting holes in her jeans climbing walls, trees or anything else she could climb the next! I am doing ok, getting a little worse each day but am not giving up hope! Hugs sweetheart! xxxx

So sorry that your girl has to go through this my dear friend!
Sudocrem is a wonderful thing I too use it when my son has sore bum as he is still in diapers and often has very lose bowel movements...That stuff heals up a sore bum so quickly! Which reminds me...I must buy more before I too run out completely!
As for advice, it sounds lie you are doing everything you can and I now of no other advice I could give to help...
I will keep her in my prayers my dear friend!
Love and Hugs

Sudocreme is a wonderful invention isn't it? I have used it for over 14 years as Niall was allergic to Lanolin which was in a lot of products back then and I have continued to use it for many things ever since! It is great on cuts and grazes as well! Niamh has been prescribed a special cream for Thrush til we find out if we need yet more antibiotics and it is helping to soothe it! Thank you heavens my darling I really appreciate your support and prayers! Hugs xxx

oh the poor sweetheart, how sensitive an area to be hurting! well, I would make sure that she does not take baths... but if a bath is soothing and a must then make sure no bubble bath in the tub... maybe a oatmeal or milk bath (I've never had oen of these, but they sound soothing) also, of course, make sure the area stays dry. Do not use any perfumed tissues or toilet paper and better yet cut up a soft cotton tshirt or other soft cotton material (flannel?) that is non abrassive, into 4 inch squares and she can dry herself off with that after using the privy.... always pat dry and do not wipe or rub.
I do hope she recovers quickly
oh yes, also yogurt with active cultures is good to eat when there is such an infection... plain unsweetened is the best if you can get her to eat it - sugars create an environment for the little buggies that cause infections... so no sweets either.
let us know how she is faring.

Modestah my friend Thank You so much for your very thoughtful advice and for caring! Most of this we already do! We haven't been able to give her a bubble bath ever and the majority of the time she has a shower! The soft cotton for drying herself is a very good idea and one I hadn't thought of! WE had an appt today and it looks like she is going to get more tests, although there was blood and protein in her urine and when they tested at the lab there was a raised white cell count (which she has almost every time she is tested) nothing grew in the cultures so it was not a UTI! She has to do another sample next week to get tested and a week later we will find out if her white cell count is back to normal and if not more tests need to be done! I will update you all when I find out any more! Thank you again sweety! xxx

I always used to get these as a child, poor little duck, I feel so sorry for her, they are horrible. I had them all through my childhood, into adulthood and I finally got rid of them when I had a hysterectomy last year. I had to have antibiotics and I always had thrush and the other one where your wee stings really bad, gosh I cannot remember its name for the life of me, but I used to drink concentrated cranberry medicine for that. You can limit it by carrying on the things that you are doing, she will hopefully grow out of it, bless her.

I'm sorry to hear that you suffered this way for so long - I know Niamh has been very unwell with some UTI's and the thrush is really bad! It is so hard to help a young child who is suffering this way! Was it cystitis you used to get too? It took me a while to remember that and all of a sudden it popped into my head!
When her results came back it showed no uti (no growth in the culture) but she did have blood, protein and high white cell count! We had to send another sample in so I will be calling for the results on Tuesday! Just hope she doesn't need a kidney scn right now - we knew she would need another one at some point but I was hoping it would be when she was older - she was so small last time it just about broke my heart! Thanks for the support sweety! xxx

Thats the one!! Everytime I tried to think of the name of it I kept getting constipation he he. Yes cystitis. Oh I hope they can sort her out, they could never find a reason for mine and it was so horrible, but these days they can do so much more. xx

Some girls are prone to uti's because of the female anatomy.
Sometimes it is necessary to put them on long term antibiotics to prevent further infections.
Avoid tub baths as well as that can bring on a uti.
If you haven't yet, take her to a pediatic urologist.
Hope all works out.
@mummymo (23706)

She hasn't actually seen a urologist but she has had a kidney scan which was seemingly okay - they did tell me she would probably need another scan when she was about 7 or 8! She mainly has showers now but even when she had a bath we could not put anything in it at all. I really want to avoid her going on lon term antibiotics if I can help it as she is already allergic to the penicillin group of antibiotics! Thank you so much for all your advice my friend, it is very much appreciated! xxx
