They came and caught my Mitten-kitten! They have to keep her for 10 days, she's going to be so tramatized, she's not a tame kitty after all! They say I can go down and volunteer time to get her out since I'm dead broke - something about all the money at the hospital after all....

Yep, any time a bite is involved, they have to be quarantined to watch for rabies, etc.
I tried to take in a couple of feral kittens some years ago and when I was able to grab one of them, she did a real number on me. I turned them over to animal control just so they wouldn't continue to run wild and make more babies, and they said since they were feral and couldn't be handled, they'd probably be euthanized. Even so, the one that mangled my hand had to be kept for the 10 days before they could even put her down.

I don't see what being afraid of other cats has to do with anything.
It's the law. When a bite occurs, they have to quarantine.

Oh noooooooo... how did that happen? I'm so sorry to hear this, as I know how much you love your cats from a previous discussion of mine. I do hope you can find a way of getting her back soon. Ten days is a long time for you to be separated from her. (((Hugggs)))
Brightest Blessings.

Ok... it was just an after thought. I do hope you get Mitten back soon. After all, you rescued her in the beginning and now that is all being undone by Animal Rescue. I don't really know what they solve by taking her away, but I do feel that it would benefit her much more to be back in your care.

We'd have no cats left if they got taken away every time one of them bit or scratched. I've never got bit bad enough to need hospital treatment, but then I'm somewhat indifferent to injuries anyway unless they refuse to heal or turn septic, and we have no rabies risk here in the UK so that's not an issue. This just seems like a case of interfering and over officious busybodies to me and I hope that you can get her back ASAP Elic.

Sorry to take so long to respond to this question, but I've only just seen it. We have no rabies in the UK because we have very strict laws on the importation of animals. These laws are strictly enforced, and since we are on an island, it's possible to do this as it is not possible for animals to just walk across the border as it is in the rest of Europe.
In the past, all animals brought in had to undergo a compulsory three month quarantine. Now though, they have relaxed the rules so that animals that have been vaccinated against rabies abroad can be brought in without having to go into quarantine in the UK.
However, they still have to wait for 3 months after being vaccinated before being imported. In effect, the 3 month quarantine is still in force, but the animal can spent that time in the country of origin rather than in a UK quarantine kennel. They also have to be tested during that period to make sure that they are not carrying the rabies virus.
The regulations are strictly enforced. Anyone caught trying to evade the anti - rabies law can be heavily fined and the animal/s destroyed if they are found to be infected at the time of importation.
Of course, we now have the Channel Tunnel which provides a 20 mile long land route into the UK from France, and it might be possible for a rabid animal to make the journey along there. There are, however, various precautions in place to prevent this which may or may not prove to be effective in the long run. For the present though, the UK is rabies free.

Why the hell did they take her anyway Elic, and why do they have to keep her for 10 days?? Why should you have to pay anything to get her out when you didn't authorize they to take her...I would have real serious talks with someone in charge there ..I mean it...I'm no fan of friggin Animal Control

Is Mitten kitten the feral you were trying to get and did that big time number with your finger? That is probably the reason..the hospital probably made a report to not only the Animal control but the department of health..they have to do that with any bites from animals in case the animal is rabid

I have been around I just haven't been responding to very many discussions but this week I am on spring break so I have more time for mylot. Barnes and Noble are doing great! They are all grown up now and still playful. Barnes loves to help with everything. Noble sleeps right bewteen my wife and I up by our heads. Barnes usually sleeps with my daughter. However, when she goes to bed early, she closes her bedroom door and both cats end up in our bedroom. They are really my daughter's cats and when she finishes college they will be leaving with her. She will finish in August of 2009, so as long as she is at home we will have Barnes and Noble.

All the money at the hospital? Oh, so like she bit you and the hospital reported her to animal control? Are they keeping her for ten days to make sure she doesn't have rabies? Well, if she wasn't ticked off, she will be now. There is no better place for her than with her mom. Besides, you wouldn't risk another cat's health if she had a disease, you'd get her treated.

i'm definately no fan of animal control. they suck. if they took your cat without authorization, you can refuse to pay them. they cannot put down you cat cuz it's not a stray. so if that happens, you can sue them. but still, ANIMAL CONTRL SUCKS!!!

Sorry to hear that about your family cat. I'm sure you love your cat. Hope your finger has fully healed since the incident.
Should anytime in the future you find yourself in a financial stress situation you can reach out for assitance to modestneeds.org
Mn is a non profit orgainzation that is fully supported by the general public, then those funds are re-distributed to people in need. It's not a hand out, but a hand up. The member donors vote who needs assistance, some members will even cover the cost in full themselves.
It would be a good site to become a friend of modestneeds in the event you may no someone who is working but there car needs repair to get to work, of child needs to go to the dentist, doctor, clothing, books, house payment, water bill, etc...
Let me know how things work out with your cat.

Oh ElicBxn! I'm so sorry!! I hope you do volunteer your time there so you can get her back! With you being there, she'll feel some sense of security and know that you do care for her and then when you take her home, it might be a good idea to keep her inside to that you can work with her better. Good luck with getting her back! My blessings to you both!

Why did they take her away? Doesn't compute. Are there laws now that our cats have to be super frinedly? Never told me if that's the case. Hope you get her back soon.

Poor thing, how awful for the both of you. See what annoys me, is hospitals are quick to report things like that, but not so quick to report the real dangerous things that happen. I really hope you can manage to get her back soon.

I sometimes feel there are times when they fail to report some injuries. But the law does require animal bites to be reported. 7 yrs ago when Nino bit me and sent me to the hospital it was the same thing, but Nino we lied and said he was up to day - because he was only a few months out and he never went outside.

OH your poor baby! She must be so stressed out right now what with being in the strange surroundings and all. I was reading your responses to everyone and you said it's because she bit you that she was taken. It sounds like the hospital made the call to have her taken in. To me that's so weird though, because my dog Snuggles bit the heck out of my daughter's hand because my daughter went to pick up the food bowl and Snuggles decided she wasn't done eating (she has food aggression). But my doctor asked me if it was my dog, if she had her shots, and that was it. He never called it in. Are you doing the volunteer time to get Mitten out? I hope so...at least that way you get to see her every day. She will be home with you soon hon. Big hugs to you sweetie.

No, they have me volunteering in a different part of the shelter than she is at, but I saw her today and she was all curled up and glaring hate at everyone so that's normal.
I'll do 2 more hours tomorrow and a final hour on Sat and then I can take her home.
She wasn't up to date on her shots is the problem, I was trying to catch her for a vet visit when she bit me.

they might have gone through a mistake so that they have taken up your cat they were meant to pick up cats who are wild or are raoming through the streets the tag of your cat might have gone lost so taht they mught have caught you cat and for the hospital bills you might have to cut down your expenses alittle bit to pay out the hospital bill or you might just ahve to took upa part of your savings

Oh, no, it was no mistake. They picked her up because she bit me and didn't have a current rabies shot. Austin doesn't pick up stray cats. Even the ferals they have are brought in by people that have trapped them. I worked 11 hours for the $110 boarding bill and they got her up to date on her shots.
She's now back in front of my house looking a bit raggiedy, but she's like 15 years old and outside only - not bad.
