Selective memory of a critical mom

My Mom made a comment to me that I needed to watch my kids closer because my 2 year old spit chocolate chip granola bar on the carpet. Now, I have 2 kids - 3 and 2 - if the worst that is happening is a puddle of chocolatey drooly granola on the floor - it's a good day. My mother tends to nit-pick and criticize my house, and how I raise my kids. Nothing is ever quite enough to please her. Well - after she left I remembered some of the things I did when I was about the same age as my kids:
I lit my bed on fire with matches ----- TWICE
I rode my tricycle to the park a couple blocks away
I started the microwave on fire trying to cook bread in a foil bag
Why wasn't she watching me closer?? Atleast my kids have never tried to burn down the house.

Isn't that funny how moms can forget things. My mom forgets that she forgot me places, like to pick me up from school, or lose me in stores. But she counters with saying that I would wander away from her. I just wanted to say - well, why weren't you watching me better. But now that I have kids it's interesting to hear her take on why she raised us the way she did. For example, we had no schedule and would eat dinner late at night at different times and we had to wake up early because we had a long drive to school/work. Growing up I hated it. My mom said that she wanted us to be learn to be flexible. We keep our kids on a schedule and she thinks we are stiffling them. I tell her that the kids are happier and not so grumpy because they know what to expect and when to expect it. Especially since my son is autisic. Gee, it's getting late, I don't think I spelled that right. It's 2am and time for bed. Hopefully your mom will calm down a bit. Good luck!
