Can Leadership Be Learned?

Can leadership be learned or must it only be experienced? I think that there are a few things you can learn in a class, but to really be a leader you have to actually do. My saying is that 90% of leadership is just being there.

hiya~ i think that it's a little of both. but i do agree totally that there is only so much that can be learned in a class. i think the learning really comes into play by observing other proven leaders, then putting the principles you glean form them to practice! ~j

Thanks for commenting. Of course, I agree with you kind of agreeing with me (Does that make sense?). Anyways, I find that it is hard to put those principles in action, especially if the culture of the workplace is not ready for change.

Let's share our fire! - The fire also symbolizes passion. Passion to make life work and make a difference. Burning and heating up and making others do as well.
Yes, in doing, we learn. Leaders have the skills learned and earned through time with the experiences they have gone through. Like my famous favorite leader idol, Abraham Lincoln, it is his experiences that he became a great leader. However, we can be leaders in our own way. Small things may it be but if we value the essence of us doing it, others will see it, the role we portrayed will make a difference in a way.

Thanks for commenting. Like you my leadership inspriration, Teddy Roosevelt, was a man of action and experience. Those experiences are what made him a great President when his time came.

Leadership is not inherited, it is developed. It's about the circumstances you live your life in. Of course there are temperamental clues that help some people be ahead of the others from this point of view, but mostly leadership is learned. There are a lot of courses to help us develop this feature. When you are put in the situation to lead, you gain experience... Leadership is one of the most things that people develop, as we have the power to improve ourselves, given the corcumstances.

I think that the capability to be a leader is in everyone, but the magnitude of the situation requires some coaching, training, and mentoring to make it happen. When those techniques are known then those who are inclined to be leaders will step up. Thanks for commenting.

I agree i think there are natural born leaders that are just meant to lead. Those people dont really put in much effort in terms of learning how to lead. On the other hand people who arent natural born leaders can only leanr so much but they wont be as effective as those natural boen leaders.

I don't really think it's possible to learn to BE a leader... you can learn leadership principles from other leaders or from a teacher but how well you put them into practice comes only from experience. Personally, I believe that some people are more suited than others to leadership. I think that most leadership qualities are learned in the growing process as a child.. those are the people referred to as 'born leaders'.

Both yes and no. There is what they say a born leader and also one that is learned or developed. So both are correct. Born leaders are those people who find it very easy to guide or lead others. As a child you'll see them talking to a big group of kids. Kids follow them for no reason. There are even instances that you're forced to be a leader because of the circumstances. Like for example, you're an eldest child they gave you responsibility to your other siblings which you don't have any skill but because of the situation you need to learn or develop it. I believe you can be whatever you want to be if you really want to. That's why there are courses offered, books etc., anything that can help you become what you want to be. But the question really is if this is what you love to do. It will be much easier for you to discover you who are. Work on what you have. Know your talents so you can maximize them. You can be more effective instead of learning something from scratch.
