Did you ever notice that the Bible has some weird laws in it?

Simon and Schuster found some of the strangest laws in the Bible...one of them being...No Mixing Fibers... "Neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woolen come upon thee." -- Leviticus 19:19
The Bible forbids wearing cloth made out of a mix of wool and linen, but other fiber combinations are fine.
Now we all know there are still some old laws in our states that have never been changed but the Bible? If you don't believe me you can read the rest of them and let me know what you think:http://www.asylum.com/2008/02/22/the-weirdest-and-toughest-laws-in-the-bible/

I think you need to look out of the box on this one. God here isn't saying literally that He does not allow the mix. He just established the law so as to ensure that low quality fabrics are not produced.
All clothing are made from 2 kinds of occurring fibers:
1. Cellulose fiber- which is made from plants. These are typically the linen and cotton.
2. Animal Fiber Protein- which is made from animals and insects. Typically wool and silk.
Of course, not forgetting that through the advances of science and technology we have the synthetic man-made fibers i.e. nylons, polyesters, rayons and etc., and unknown to many these synthetic fibers are combined with to such a manner - mimicing the characteristics of certain quality fiber cloths. In short, when you mix fibers of varying characteristics, you create a fabric that is of low quality and will wear out quickly.
Now back to this verse, God simply at that time did not want the manufacturers to create low quality products and take advantage of - and deceive - the consumers. Such actions would then break the spirit of the 8th Commandment.
The materials are NOT sin in themselves, it is just that they are of a lower quality.
Now, as you are aware now about these low quality materials it DOES NOT mean that it is a sin to buy and own such products. It applies something beyond the product which is the principle of quality and honesty. You see when we sell and own the best quality products we are setting a good example for ourselves and the people around us and that in turn honours ourselves and more importantly God. Cheap imitations, either in clothing and/or one's character does not.
I hope you see the light here.

emeraldisle the eating of pork is the same as eating a vulture. They are scavengers and will eat any thing. Pig's bodies contain many toxins, worms and latent diseases. Influenza (flu) is one of the most famous illnesses which pigs share with humans and can be passed on when the meat or any part of they body is eaten. if you study the laws scientifically there are very good reasons for many of those laws.

Although I do agree with you in that many of these things were merely quidelines many would disagree and that the laws were just that, laws. They were to be followed and not questioned. The same with not eating Pork for example. That to break the law was to be punished by God. Like I said I think it was more of a quideline but many do not. Many would concern such laws to be taken literally.

emeraldisle,
I am sorry here, but can you tell me what are you trying to say here? I am really confused. Could you phrase this again?

If we kept more of those laws we would be a lot healthier and a lot healthier. There was science behind most of those laws believe it or not. Did you read any of the comments. They were very interesting and explained a lot about those weird laws

I thought the same thing as I was reading them. We would be a lot healthier and clothes might even be cheaper! I did read the comments and found them very interesting.

The old testiment does have some odd laws such as that one and the laws regarding what one can and cannot eat, but also at the same time because we h ave Jesus many of those laws aren't as important as the Ten Commandments and the things Jesus taught.

The King James Version states wool and Linen, but other versions state mixed fibers. This is also stated in Deuteronomy 22:11
In Revolations 15:6 linen means moral purity and in Luke 16:19, it is mentioned as a mark of Luxury.
Wool in Ezek 27:19 Simplicity and separateness of God's Covenant people. (Whiteness of the wool) to me means purity.
God wants us to follow his commands. He does not want different species of animals crossed, and he does not want fields planted to more than one kind of seed. To me there is much to be said in the fact that God does not want us to experiment or to lust after anything greater than what he has provided. He wants purity.
Wool is an animal fiber and Linen, plant. Wool is soft and lofty with lots of give (stretchy), very warm, has natural oil and wickes the elements from our bodies. Linen is hard, course and cutting. It has tremendous strenghth even spun fine, yet does not wick as does wool. In a yarn sense, they are totally opposite and would not mix well.

The ban wasn't about the two being spun into the same fiber, that gives crappy yarn and even biblical spinners would know that. The KJB is full of mistranslations just as are all English bibles. Linen which required far more work to produces was a product of wealth, wool a product for the poor. The ban would have prevented spinners from making product affordable by the middle class, mostly the merchants and master craftsman, that would have set themselves apart from the poor. Setting yourselves apart from the poor but not accepted by the rich was tantamount to rebellion. This another fine example of how religion was used by rich and powerful to control the masses.
This has been done in more modern times as well when the notion of making blended wool and linen fabrics. Upset the economics of prominent church families. When Lindsey-woolsey, or linsey wool as it came to be known was first introduced it was ignored by the C of E, until one family who had interest in the textile industry and several bishops including Kent, Wessex, Sussex, and Bath, among the relations. The church condemned and excommunicated the Lindsey millers, and the proceeds were divided evenly among the church and the family who immediately went to producing linsey wool using cotton which the family had great imperial business interests in.
Just as in fabric in biblical times would have been made, linsey wool has cotton or linen warp with woolen weft.

Hi,
I believe those weird laws is just a guideline for us to follow. Please don't follow it blindly as many of it can't apply to our world now.

lol....yes, definitely!
Reading this post, I immediately thought of a song I wrote for a church friend - I write songs anyway and I was challenged by someone to write one about the 'unclean' food laws in Leviticus (just because they thought I couldn't so it, I think!) so here it is....!
Take one hyrax, slice it thin,
Put some toasted manna in,
Might be tasting quite the thing,
But soon you'll have food poisoning!
Hyrax's who come from rocks
Really make quite rancid stock,
Check the hooves, see what I mean,
Don't go there, it is unclean!
But if you should float awhile,
Give a fish a friendly smile,
Shove a hook right up its nose,
Ah, you'll make a meal of those!
Goldfish are your neighbors pets?
Go and visit with a net!
If a fin cannot be seen
Don't go there, it is unclean!
Take a pigeon, make a pie,
If you're fond of things that fly,
Buzzards, eagles, things that coo -
They're not legal, they're not food.
You must not admit to craving
Sauted owl or buttered raven,
Tasty as the jackdaw seems,
Don't go there, it is unclean!
All we have to look at now
Is cooking our pre-packaged cow,
Barely even know it used to moo,
Sunday joint from Superstore
Doesn't have hooves anymore,
I don't want to know what it has chewed!
God told Moses he should tell
Manna's that would make us quail!
Locust sandwich, anybody keen?
What He really had to say
Was, to those who should obey,
"Don't be going there, it is unclean!"
:0)

I always knew the old testiment had some odd laws. If you read Leviticus 11 it goes through the kinds of meats we are not allowed to eat as well.

I do agree there are some strange laws in the bible especially the Old Testament. Some of these laws had basis for them, due to health reasons for example. Others though I really wonder about. The thing is for many people these laws are to be followed, not questioned, not concidered but followed faithfully and to the letter. Personally most laws like that, if I can't understand the reasoning for them then I question and want to check on it. I don't like to follow anything blindly.

The thing that kills me is that Christians pick and choose which laws of the bible they want to enforce. For example I've seen so many people quote from Leviticus proving that being gay is a sin. But they don't follow all of the laws of Leviticus. The way I feel is that noone has a right to bring out bible verses to condemn someone for their sins unless they follow every law in the bible themselves.

What is your favorite scripture in the bible? My favorite scripture and one of the first one is
John 3:16 For God so love the world, that he gave his only begotten son that who so ever believe in him should not perish but have everlasting life, should not perish but have everlasting life. So just go back to this scripture if you are down, or not feeling great in spirit.

Dont eat or handle pork (and various other foods)
Method of prayers
Makes you think about who was writing these books

Yes, I did, may be this verse may helps;
Ezekiel 20:25 (King James Version)
Wherefore I gave them also statutes that were not good, and judgments whereby they should not live;
(This means that God-given laws or commandments are sometimes suspect.)-from the work of Donald Morgan.
