ahh.. one of the few times of the year when my self righteous indignation rises to the surface in the form of annoyance and downright rage. everyones decking out with shamrocks and "wearin o` the green" quite frankly, it sickens me. most of the folks guzzling down their green beer and adopting lineage to the emerald isle hasnt a clue what this day is truly celebrating. what patrick did to become this sposed "saint", and this also saddens me greatly. people will reply, "he drove the snakes from ireland!" wewt! but they arent aware of what "snakes" is a gentle euphamism for. people.. MY people.. my bloodline. the snakes he is heralded for herding and removing from ireland, are people. the celts. those who refused to convert to the new religion and chose death over betrayals to the gods they loved. not only am i of celtic descent, i too serve those they served. being a celt and a heathen, this day has a double whammy of sorrow and grief within my heart and home. on a daily basis i can quell my irritations over the ignorance of the masses regarding my faith. deal with the bigotry, hatred and fear. closed minds and the random attempt to save my immortal soul ;scoffs; but some days.. are more difficult than others. march 17th is one of them. how can people that claim to be educated and civilized rejoice in the mass murders and the attempted erradication of an entire people all sposedly in the name of loving god? men, women and children slaughtered in their beds or dragged out as examples to be splattered upon the Earth, whose only crime was they didnt worship a dead man on a cross. so when those around me take the day and pretend they speak gaelic, toss on festive green clothing, and pay homage to this man, i, for one, remember.. that his path to sainthood is stained with my blood. that it was the voices of my own that were silenced under his dedications, and pay my respects to those who got him there. bendithion ar eich taith

Well said! Of course, I'm an English Anglo - Saxon with a dash of Norse so I pay no attention to St Patrick's day or St Georges day for that matter, but your Celts are not alone in having been converted by force. Norway's Saint Olaf was plain King Olaf when he was converted to Christianity. He then proceeded to convert all of Norway by the simple expedient of executing all who refused. As you can imagine, the conversion rate picked up quite a bit after the first few executions. He was made a saint for this, just like Patrick (who was not even Irish by the way, his family came from the region of Carlisle) But you probably know that.

For thousands of years we put up a wall against invaders and either kept them out, or eventually welcomed them in to live amongst us. The Romans came, and we nearly drove them out as well. Long will live the memory of Queen Boudicca and her unifying the celtic tribes in a revolt against the Romans. If not for the one lucky chance of finding the exact perfect battle field to stand against her, world history would be quite different.
Let us remember one thing on this sad day, history is written by the victor. Why? Because the main Victor has been the Christians who prefer genocide to co-existance!
The day will come soon, when the white chapel will crumble in disrepair. We were here first. We are still here. And we will be here long after the church becomes a section of a history book on ancient mythology.

Wow! Thank you for the education. I am 3/4 Irish though I'm not 100% sure as to who I'm related to. I have to admit that I have been a lazy Irish woman and I don't really even celebrate St Patty's. Our family keeps the holidays down to the big ones as we don't really see a reason to spend a ton of money of things we don't even understand. I can feel your anger but you have to admit that a huge of the people in the us seem to be willing to celebrate anything if it means there is going to be a parade and an excuse to get drunk. I hope you find peace in your life.
