I myself only use my pay cheque to pay bills, buy groceries, and buy gas.
I set aside about 300 dollars each month in a savings account for the times that bills are suddenly larger (like propane)
I cut down my grocery bills by looking for coupons, only buying items on sale or in bulk, applying the coupons to sale items to make them less. I bought the fabric bags to use so i dont have to pay the $$ for plastic bags at certain stores. I buy generic foods rather than brand name.
In the summer i grow my own vegetables - its amazing how a little bit of work can save you so much money over the long run.
If you gotta buy books - buy them used/second hand or just borrow them from friends or the library

There is no trick or secret.
Figure out your expenses, and look at your bank statements to see where you're spending money you don't need to be.
You'll be left with two numbers;
1) Your income
2) Your expenses
Hopefully #2 will be reduced as you can remove expenses that are unnecessary.
Once you've got the two numbers, set aside the difference into a savings account.
It doesn't matter if you only start out by saving $25 or $250 or $2500 per cheque or per month, as long as you save something. Each cheque or month, try to save a little more. Like going to the gym it takes practice, routine and disciple.
Good luck.
