Picnic Ingredients

In the UK right now it is not really good picnic weather. However, I believe that you can picnic anytime any place. My ideal picnic involves no hot food at all. Cold chicken and ham is a must. Beautiful fresh bread and butter, A green salad. cheese and biscuits. Boiled eggs. Perhaps a set milk pudding or a trifle (yum Yum) and plenty of lemonade or ginger beer. Unless we are being really posh, when it is champagne and red wine. What are the ingredients for your perfect picnic.

While the perfect picnic might be (sometimes) a basket of good fried chicken, potato salad, beans and sweet iced tea, spread out on a tablecloth under a tree in the park, when the weather is not as good as it could be and I'm in the mood for a picnic, I spread the tablecloth out in the middle of the living room floor and we have an inside picnic in the house. It's a nice change from the mundane if you just can't get outside. Sometimes, we even take it out into the yard. Whatever works, right?

A couple more advantages to the indoor picnic are (1) if you "forget" an item, you can just walk to the kitchen or pantry to get it, and (2) you have your own toilet to use instead of a Port-A-Potty!

Indoor picnics can be the best, and nobody complains about having to carry stuff for miles either. Great choice of menu too.

I forgot about the sausages. Finish them with marmalade for a fantastic sticky treat. I shall put those ingredients in too. Thank you.

I don't think I have a perfect picnic. I have a pain in the butt toddler who absolutely will not eat a sandwich. He'll eat all the toast in the world but he will not eat bread so I have to be a bit more creative with picnic food! We would normally have yoghurts, crisps and maybe pickled onions and a piece of fruit - tomatoes, apples, bananas, raisins. Whatever we happen to have around or can buy from Tesco! I like to cheat sometimes and buy those little ready-made tub things of pasta salads, sushi, etc. - again, whatever I can get fairly cheap from Tesco! I suppose if I put together a perfect picnic for me, it would have to be tuna sandwiches, pickled onions and beetroot, cherry tomatoes, a banana and lemonade (but my bigger pain in the butt can not have most fizzy drinks so we have to take squash - which has to be orange because the little one is allergic to purple!) Actually, thinking about this, my ideal picnic would be anything that didn't involve my kids! Only joking, they're great company - they're just bugs.

Thanks. Ok, dreaming, my ideal picnic would be... probably the same actually, just under a really nice canopy or on a warm beach rather than here under the clouds beside the canal.

They don't get better. Just older. I've just had a row with mine about overdrafts! She wants one, I don't want her to have one. But I know exactly what you mean about getting what you can from Tesco. Some of their stuff lends itself very nicely to picnics. Ready made stuff does have its place.

I just had to give you the BR for your realism. Yours is the sort of picnic that real people have, but we can dream can't we?

I haven't had a picnic since I went white water rafting last July. I boiled up some corn on the cob that morning and wrapped it is foil with some butter while it was still steaming hot. I also took cold fried chicken and a chuck of cheddar cheese and some french bread. Also my homemade lemonade. But by the time we made it off the river we were all so famished (having skipped breakfast to make our 9:00 AM launch time) we would have eaten just about anything. I think a picnic will be a great idea for this Saturday. I may even set up the tent and let the kids camp out in the living room since we have to go to my SO's mothers house for Easter this Sunday and I don't have to worry about making dinner and hiding eggs.

I know that "we're here so lets eat the picnic now" feeling. Sound like you had a great day though. An indoor picnic is great too. Just watch their poor little tummies after they have gorged all those eggs!

Oh definately the cold chicken and ham with a french loaf and butter, cold cocktail sausages, the boiled eggs, a selection of cheeses, satay strips with peanut sauce, a feta cheese salad and real lemonade. Hungry now so off to do a ham, cheese and tomato toastie! Can't wait til the weather improves then off to the beach with a picnic tea after school most days. Ellie :D

Mmmmm. Fantastic, make me a toastie too please. Picnics on the beach after school. Haven't done that in years. I used to take my daughter down to Bournemouth after school sometimes. And we have been known to breakfsat on the beach at West Bay. I want to go right now! I shall regret starting this discussion I just know it.

I don't know where you live in the UK Ruby, but my wife and I went down to the coast near Bournemouth one evening last week and had a lovely car picnic. My only complaint is why do other people feel the need to park right next to you in an otherwise empty car park? You can have indoor picnics too.

I would normally take all the things you mentioned, plus potato salad, coleslaw, maybe a little rice with mushrooms, peas and garlic salt mixed in, and maybe some cold pizza. I wouldn't have milk pudding or trifle for dessert... I would have either fruit pies, strawberries, or a fresh fruit salad. You're making me hungry for a picnic now. Roll on summer! Brightest Blessings.

You must go for a picnic. You live in a place that is just right for all that outdoor eating. Ham and chicken - YUMMY.

Hmm do you ever have an indors picnic p1kef1sh? We do that quite often and the kids love it - we mainly have an indoors one cos the weather is too bad for an outdoors one! lol Our picnic fayre tends to be far less healthy than normal packed lunches and includes sausage rolls, quiche, cocktail sausages, boiled eggs, bananas, grapes and pre cut melon squares! yummy. I usually make up a flask of diluting juice, strawbwerry or apple are the favourites and I love a cheeky bottle of pear cider! I can feel an indoors picnic coming on for easter! lol xxx

Exactly - what is the point of worrying about healthy foods at a time when they are stuffing themselves with chocolate! Pizza is not popular? OMG I cannot imagine life without pizza! lol There is a really easy tasty way of making pizza at home they might like - Naan bread pizza! Just spread some tomato puree onm the naan bread , place on desired toppings, ham, mushrrom, sweetcorn, peppers, smoked sausage, pepporoni, pineapple , whatever your favourite is or whatever you have in the house, top with grated chees and place in a hot oven for about 6 mins - easy and tasty! xxx

When my little one was less big we often had indoor picnics. If I mention it now the reply is invariably "Like at Pizza Hut". Although since becoming a student pizza is less popular. But I have no problem with unhealthier food at picnics - it's time for fun not worrying about the lentil stew and the alfalfa salad. Go for it. Have an Easter egg picnic.

Deviled eggs, without a doubt. But only if it's not terribly hot, for obvious reasons. Cold fried chicken, fried by me of course, in the iron skillet, crispy, moist and delicious. Fresh fruit, like melon and strawberries, maybe some whipped cream, after all, no kids at my picnics. Chocolate cake. Cheese, of course. Maybe some dark rum with pineapple juice. Ok, I'm ready. Now, where shall we go?

your lunch sounds like what my mom used to pack for our picnics and I did in back years too. i love cold fried chicken, and thin sliced ham, and really good bread, always have to have my cheese, I am a cheeseoholic, and usually homemade cake or moms strawberry rhubarb pie, yummy to say the least. Sometimes we too took along a big jug of ice and lemonade. sometimes we had dry ice and a big ripe red juicy watermelon, home grown of course.

i feel the secret of a successful picnic is simplicity and good packing.i feel finger food is the most perfect of picnic fare.i love sandwiches ,easy to prepare an dcarry, though i feel you can make a change to it by taking your favourite fillings in pitta bread or focaccia along with some pickles, drinks to go with it,lots of napkins and sliceable cake!!!

Finger food is yummy as is everything else on your list. Napkins are a good idea too. I always forget them and we have to wipe our fingers on the grass.
