"It's so dead...."
"I like the singer.... "
"I like the lyrics.... "
"His voice is good.... "
"Don't know what he is mumbling...."
These are some comments I get when my friends and I were discussing about a particular song. There can be more than 101 comments as we go on..
Friends, what makes you decide you like a song?
Is it because of the music?
The singer?
The lyrics?
Or ??????
Kindly share your views. Many thanks :)

I wish it was so easy for me to say why or why not I like a song. If I had to pick one quality of a song that would make me like it or not like it I would have to say the song would be one that I would be able to sing.
I DO like songs of a certain genre and that is not to say that songs of another genre are not singable... so there is more to it than just that.
Thanks for a great question.

If a song makes me lose my train of thought of what I am doing when I hear it for the first time, that is a song that I like... a song that is ground-breaking... I can remember exactly where I was.
When I heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for the first time I remember exactly who I was talking to, where I was and my though was what the **** is THAT! I LOVE IT.
Of course that was the end of heavy metal music (for the most part) and the end of the hair bands and the introduction of Grunge into the world.
Thanks
Zelo

Different songs strike me different ways. Sometimes I really like the beat of the song, so I will listen to it a lot. From this, I will learn the words, and usually like them as well. Also, sometimes I will hear the words to a song, and really like it, especially if it sends out a good, loving, and/or fun message. There are other times when I hear my favorite artist has a new song out, and I will listen to it just because of the singer...but that doesn't mean I will like it.

It´s a bit of a mixture of everything you mentioned here. I love David Bowie´s voice, but if his lyrics and music were bad (which is not the case in my opinion) I wouldn´t listen to him.
I do make exceptions when I go to a discotheque though, because I would never dance or even stay there for more than half an hour if I would pay a lot of attention to the lyrics. Mind you, I hardly ever go there, (guess I´m getting old):-)).

though there are numerous medium for self expression but songs are the most approachable facts.it often discussed that songs revives and reflects human nature of understanding and once attitudes towards self and others.well for me songs are not merely meant as source of entertainment but it is self realiazation and passionate ways of reflecting facts of world.songs must inherit meaning ful message ,especially highlighting social, cultural and economic aspects.nevertheless for appealing masses commandable voice is a must.

I think with me it depends on the tune and the sound. I like certain types of music and if it has a nice beat, or cruisy one then I tend to focus on that first, then find out who sings it and then go from there. Somestimes the lyrics capture me first but mostly it's the sound that attracts me first off.

im a lover of all types of music, from alternative and hard rock to classical even country. what makes me like a song is if i can FEEL it. if the artist is really putting their heart into what theyre doing, and it reaches through the speakers and touches me. there are artists that put out albums just for the money, and there are others that do the work because it is in their souls, and you can definitely tell the difference tween the two.

i like a song when the melody caresses my ears...i have sensitive ears so there are songs that do not appeal. otherwise, i usually like what is commonly heard, because then it becomes familiar., lol when it is unfamiliar, i don't like songs that easily

It depends on my mood, to a large extent. Sometimes I might like a song and then later listen to it again and not understand what I liked about it originally. I'm just weird like that, I guess.
There are some singers that I'm going to like almost anything they do, because I'm just that obsessed with them. You could have Stevie Nicks singing just about anything and I'd listen to it, or Sarah McLachlan, or Loreeena McKennitt, or... the list goes on and on.
If, on the other hand, it's not a singer I'm familiar with, the lyrics are probably going to be the main thing for me. Unless I'm trying to dance (trying being the operative word there), in which case the music might be more important to me. But usually, if I'm just relaxing and listening to music, it has to have good lyrics. I want a story song, or a song that conveys feelings I can relate to.

For me, depending on the type of song... when its a romance/love song, its the lyrics and the melody of the song that I like. When it comes to rock or hit songs... its the beat of the song.
But there are times that I hear the song, then I feel that I already like the song and want to hear it over and over again. it happens most of the time here in the shop when the customer just keep on playing the song almost everyday.

well, am a musician myself, and for me it got to be good. it takes a hell lot of stuff to make a song, and if you want to make it good, you have to be care full from a to z. means the lyrics, the theme, the instruments, the vocal....everything must be good.

I like the music for what it is. I need to like the melody, the singer's voice, if there is a singer, the instruments used, and the rhythem. I listen to a lot of songs in other languages, just because I like the way they sound. I don't need to be able to understand the lyrics, in order to enjoy a song.

The lyrics are the most important thing to me, they either have to make me think or be able to identify with them for me to like the song, I like comedy music too so if they make me laugh that can help. I also like a good guitar or piano solo and I like rock music so if it rocks and has good lyrics and the singer is talented I'll like it.
There's a lot of people in the charts nowadays who don't have interesting voices or good vocal ranges that really bugs me as they all sound the same.

for me, the song has to be constructed well. it needs to have good lyrics, it needs to have the write kinf of mood, it has to be original or relaxing or good quality...
it's hard to say why i like certain songs - some i like that nobody else in the world would like...
but if i like it, then i'm not too worried about anyone else liking it :)

well some songs really get a good grip towards the listeners. I mean, okay the singer maybe cool, beautiful, handsome, great singing, great lyrics or whatever, but I often found that even songs without lyrics, were often 'amazing' for me.
I love some instrumental songs and I mean they were not really very great if we talk about the music technique or how good the musician played it. I can like any song but never become a fan of the singers / musicians. however, I have to admit, I'm quite connected to some songs, even just those ones without the lyrics, but maybe because my mind just feels connected with the melodies, or even just the background melodies or the theme of the song. I think our mind and our soul react to some certain song unknowingly, and we just then start to like the songs, the more we listen to them, the more we love the songs.
so it was some kinda .... unexplainable for some certain people. I may love Middle Eastern theme for example, and someone else may feel I have a bit 'unusual' taste of music. the person might love R&B, and I would think his / her taste was 'unusual' too. it is the state of mind of each person, perhaps? :P
