"Fun with D!ck and Jane" should have been named "A Choppy Story with Some Humor In It". The sad part about watching this movie is that it gives you great flashes of humor but as a whole is not totally hilarious. With a choppy story, that is loosely pasted together, it is a movie that successfully showcases Jim Carrey and Tea Leoni as funny comedians.. but gives you little else.
The fun ride is..
In Jim Carrey's latest comedy co-starring Tea Leoni is "Fun With D!ck and Jane". The story is this:D!ck Harper(Jim Carrey) has worked hard for many years, and that drilling labor has finally payed off. When a promotion falls to him from the high powers that be. He then becomes the vice president of Globodyne. A worldwide business leader in media property consolidation.
Sadly, after only a single day on the job, a catastrophe (like that of Enron's) fell harshly upon Globodyne, leaving good ol' D!ck with the blame.
Having no time to save money, not to mention having all assests tied up in Globodyne stocks and savings, this new occurrence makes Jane's recently quiting her job.. more than just a bad idea.
After attempting to gain monetary assets being goody goody and playing by the rules, D!ck and Jane is unprepared to live life, in anyway, that falls short of the prosperous American Dream. But after failed attempts that lead to poverty, D!ck and Jane, resort to the zany idea... if stealing was prosperous for his boss, then it might prove worthy for them.
Using newfound stealing skills,(not to mention newfound courage) D!ck and Jane go on a some what hilarious ride which includes teaching big business men big financial lessons. "Fun With D!ck and Jane" is a simple tale (that is possibly too simple) of a couple of spouses going a little nutzo while attempting to grab a firm hold, on the good ol' American Dream.
A "B Movie" type of Comedy "Fun with D!ck and Jane" needed $100 million dollars to be made. Where did the money go.. well probably never know. With sets that are not intricate or amazing cinematic, it seems more like a low budget film than a movie that spent more money than most mid-businesses make yearly. Directed by Dean Parisot who did a splendid job with "Galaxy Quest", you would have expected much better scenery like what you get in G.Q. and a funnier ride (seeing as how it's written by Judd Apatow.. screenwriter of "The 40-Year Old Virgin".)
While certainly funny in many parts and hilarious in just a few, it makes for a disappointing watch. Its frustrating to see Jim and Tea giving a performance that was entertaining, but seemed like it was a grind to make... rather than a fun time.
The story was very choppy. Loosely thrown together it really makes us feel like we are watching a B movie, rather than a blockbuster costing movie flick. The ending as well is choppy and very uninspired. It makes sense, but it does not make for comfort. The thing that made me most uncomfortable about this movie was that two parts into the movie, I was just enduring rather than enjoying. You knew what you had at hand, and like a hot potato.. you just want to toss it aside.
If you want a movie that is complete as a story and complete when it comes to the funny... this movie is far from what you want. If you want a movie that is funny with Jim Carrey, you should look to: "Liar Liar" or "Bruce Almighty". Both of these movies where also high costing, but you can tell where the cash went. (Plus, they actually make you laugh.) Also, a good pick for a Tea Leoni view is "The Family Man" which is not only funny but has the heart that sadly was absent in this movie.
Lacking in story and consistency in humor, I was glad that I did not pay to watch this movie. It also makes me feel bad that I ended up disliking a movie that someone believed worthy of spending on its production, more money than most people can even fathom.

I refused to see this remake. I saw and have the 1977 version. It starred Jane Fonda and George Segal. It was great. It was set in the 70's and it was cool and funny. If you get the chance , rent it and tell me what you think.

I have seen the original, and it is infinetly greater than this remake. If you dont end up seeing this new version, it will be just fine, because you wont be missing a single good thing.

I am very hard on remakes anyway but when I saw the promos for this film, i Knew I shouldn't see it.Why go and pay about 10 dollars for a inferior film when you own a better version?

i like the movie, but the funny parts were concentrated only to the time they got broke, became desperate, and started robbing places. overall, i liked the movie. but i'd only give it a rating of A-.
