For lunch I had one of those instant dry packets of soup. Well it tasted like it had alot of salt in it so I put alot of crackers in it. Like that would help!LOL So now I cant get enough of water to drink. I should have just eaten a salt block. So why does salt make us so thirsty? Do you know?

Salt absorbs water so too much salt will make us thirsty. I don't get exceptionally thirsty when I use too much salt but rarely do I eat salty foods. I have high blood pressure and it's best to stay away from salt. The preservatives put in some of the soups and other foods have alot of sodium. I tend to stay away from them just as a precaution. In fact, I don't even use salt on a baked potato or vegetables. Once I adjusted to eating this way, I didn't miss it. Had to retrain my tastebuds..lol

It has to do with this little thing called osmosis. Basically, water can pass in and out of your cells through the cell membrane; salt, not so much. When you add salt to water, it dissolves and eventually diffuses throughout the liquid until the concentration is the same everywhere in the container. Well, the same thing tries to happen when you eat a lot of salt, but because the salt doesn't pass through your cell membrane as readily as water does what ends up happening is the water gets pulled out of the cells in order to even out the salt concentration. That's what makes you thirsty.
BTW, that's also what IV's are at a specific salt concentration. You have the same concentration of salt in your blood. If there wasn't any salt in the IV, water would enter your cells to equalize the concentration and that could make the cells burst. To much salt would make the cells shrivel up.

Because it has a lot of Sodium in it, which is actuality is not Good for you especially if you have High Blood pressure. That is why they have the No Salt products out there. I know how it is though when you eat something Salty to feel thirsty all of the time. I have heard some of the best things we can do, is drink a lot of water to help flush your system out from all that salt.

It has to do with balance - You know how much I like that word.
After salty food is absorbed by the body your blood becomes saltier too and as is circulates it tends to absorb water from the cells that in turn enter in panic and send signals to the brain that we need more water to dilute all that "saltiness" :)
It takes a lot of water doesn't it?
I actually like my food a little bit to the salty side and although I know it's not extremely healthy, it's not completely bad for me because my blood pressure is always to the low side.
SO, but salty and all, was the soup good? :)

It is interesting that most instant soups - both canned or powered - are so salty. I wonder if it's to cover up the fact that without the salt they don't really taste like much, or to disguise the taste of the additives and other stuff they use LOL

some days I seem to be more salt sensitive than others. I made a scalloped asparagus once and it tasted so salty to me I was embarrased (it was brought for a pot luck) but everyone raved at how good it was... they did not notice all the salt. maybe it is my body's way of protecting itself.
it makes us thirsty because it draws the water out of our system

I don't know why they put in so much salt. I take meds for high blood pressure and I try to stay away from those soups or else I get a very bad headache and regret ever eating it.

It has something to do with the salt absorbing all the liquid , or at least I think it is! Or should that be the salt goes into the blood and takes the fluid from the cells in our body so we need to drink more to dilute the salt! It is something along those lines as I was discussing it with Niamh the other week and we researched it - why can't I have a better memory? xxx

I know that salt dries up the blood when having too much so maybe it dries up anything liquid? That's my best guess. Other than that, beats me! lol

I don't have a scientific answer for you, but I sympathize with you about the soup.
I eat a lot of Ramen Noodles and the little seasoning packets are way too salty for me. I usually use half a packet for each package of noodles, and save the rest to use for other things.
I've got quite a large number of packets stored away now. What do do, what to do? LOL ...
