Is it practically good to be honest?

I have been into monitoring my class and leading my fellows for the benefit. I have always been honest in my work and never compromised in doing something which would benefit my people but they may hurt them. It is something I usually face as a consequence. In this world, where people are more concerned with themselves, honesty is something that characterizes very few people. But I believe that honesty pays good in the long run. Do you think honesty is something we do need to possess?
