It will depend, but I think I can understand him.
I have a close friend, we don't always meet each other, sometimes I felt that he always ignored me before. But one day,I said there were many people said you had changed, you were so indifferent now,I didn't know why. Then he asked me a question very seriously, "Do you think I have changed myself?".I said I don't think so,and then he said "that's right.I don't care others' words, I just care yours" . At that time I know even if we couldn't see each other frequently and sometimes he ignored me, but he values our friendship. He has his own business,he couldn't meet you and pay much attention to you every time.
Every thing that happened must have its own reasons,do not be so upset at once, you can think the things in his shoes, and I think you will undetrstand your friend. If he/she is your real close friend,I think he/she don't want to hurt you.

If she/he is unhappy and so ignores me, I will try to find out the reason and try to get him or her out of that situation. But if I am ignored for no reason, I too just simply ignore and dont try to contact. If I am still not contacted I just forget it.

TERRIBLE! especially if it is a close friend who choose to ignore you as a result of some misunderstanding or even nothing at all. It is really sad. I would not let it go and try to seek an explanation. I do not force nor rush but will give him some space if needed. Whatever it takes, to secure a chance to speak out is a must.
