Temp Jobs

I need to increase my income with more than what I'm able to find on the internet, and I'm considering going to one of the local temp agencies. If you've done this before: What sort of work did you do? Was it part time or full time? Did it lead to direct hire? I've done all of the above. Through temp agencies, I've worked at: NC State Dept of Commerce (would have turned into direct hire, but they thought I wanted temporary!) Company that provided employees to IBM and others that needed geeks Nation's largest radio research firm; turned into direct hire So, if you've worked through a temp agency, do tell! Please don't discuss other jobs not through an agency; that will be another topic!

When I was in college many years ago, I went to a temp agency and they found me a part time position for 2 weeks. I filled in for a woman who was going on vacation. She answered phones for a company and it was a great paying position. It worked perfectly, as I was off from college. The money helped me pay for textbooks.

That's the type of thing I'm looking for. Nothing hard, just something to bring in a few extra dollars to get me by. I don't really want to work full time again, I don't think I could handle it.

I am currently signed up with two different temp agencies. One of the great benefits for me is that I may decide not to work for a few days or months. I can take a position that is temporary or interview for temp-to-hire positions. In that case, the agency would place me with a company for up to three months. That gives me and the employer time to determine if we are a good fit. Recently, I applied for a temp-to-hire administrative assistant position, but I knew within two months that I did not want the permanent position. I like the fact that I get to choose! Currently, I am with a temp firm that has benefits, such as insurance, holiday and sick pay. I doubt that I will ever go back to one permanent position.

Yep, that's exactly what I've experienced in the past, and what I'm hoping to get now.

it was alright...i worked at several places for a day here and a day there. in a way this is good because sometimes it will lead to a job, sometimes not....but it is good experience because you learn to do a lot of different things.

I worked for Volt temporary services a few years ago. They put me on a 1 year assignment at Hewlett Packard in Colorado Springs. The pay was decent and a permanent position was possible, though when the project was complete I left to go to another full time job with benefits. I liked the fact that I could pick whether I wanted full-tim or part-time and whatever worked best for my schedule. Although I just wanted full-time at that point to earn a living as I was new to the state. They were a pretty good agency to work for as I recall.

Thanks for your input. I'm hoping to be able to get something part time a few hours a day, or a few days a week of full days. I have no idea what might be available around here (I'm new to the state as well), but I'm hopeful something will fit my needs.

I worked at a temp agency for a few years. Getting you a job means money in the agencies pocket as you probally already know. However, if a company desides to keep you on as there employee and not the agency, you will start receiving your full pay. I found that most people looking for employment could benefit from the temp agency because you could ask to work somewhere else till you find the right job for you. Most companies will evaluate you after 90days and decide whether to keep you on as there employee. A lot of the work is assembly or factory work, with some clerical.

Yes, I know how the system works with the agency getting paid a portion of what the employer pays. The employer still makes out because they don't pay any of the other fees associated with a full-time employee (insurance, etc). If they hired that person direct, they would have those other things to factor in, and the employee's pay would probably end up being about the same. It's a wash, or close to. (I know, because I opted not to take the insurance plan with one that I hired on with and negotiated for a higher hourly wage instead).

I wish I could help you. But you also know that I am out of work right now. I am also looking for work. And since I got my green card now, I can work legally now. But my problem is that I don't have car yet and a driver's license. It's hard to work around here because places are too far. Maybe this spring. Anyway, I asked for an application form in the nearest grocery store which we frequented. I filled it up and submit it the last time my mother-in-law and I did our weekly groceries. So I was hoping that if a need for a new personnel comes spring or summer, I will be hired at Hannaford, and work in the grocery. I don't mind if I will do bagging, or customer service. I just need to work and get out of the house.

I know what you mean. Hannaford is a big chain up in New England, I know. My sister was a manager in customer service at her local store for many years. She really enjoyed it. I don't think there is any shame in doing honest work of any kind. I've done things that others might look down on, but I've also done some 'important' things; I don't have to prove myself to anyone. I don't think I could bag groceries, though, I'd probably have things squished or put too much in one bag!

Well, it's nice to see that other people have had a good time working as a temp. I had a horrible time and never got an offer of a permanent job. Mostly, I did data entry and accounting, but all the agencies I worked for said that everyone complained about me. I think I was just too good of a worker. I would never work for a temporary agency unless I had to, they treat you like crap.

I've thought about that, but I've had several other non-temp jobs before I started working as a temp where I've gotten heaps of praise and good performance reviews. I also have a permanent job that I've had for a very long time with positive performance reviews year after year. I'm not saying that I'm perfect, but I don't think I'm that bad, either. They always seem to complain when it gets to the point where the agency starts pressuring them to hire me permanently (after about three to six months). No one ever complained to my face, it was always after the fact.

Then it could be a lot of things, because you were a temp, or something not related to that at all (basic personality differenes, etc). Thank you for taking my comment in the spirit it was intended, genuine curiosity, and not meaning to be malicious.

I always had a good work ethic and it's possible that others felt I made them look bad, but I don't think anyone ever complained to anyone about it. They've joked to me, but it never went any further (that I know of, obviously). I've never had one 'treat me like crap' either. I'm going to go out on a limb here (and probably regret it), but if you were 'treated like crap' from the agency and other people complained about you, do you think it could possibly be you, and not everyone else?

Temp agencies are great, they are nice way to get in the door of major companies. I work temp as file clerk for the State of Florida, and eventually was offered a permanent job. I got that assignment from Manpower. I also did temp work with Kelly Services, they kept me really busy. I work in doctors offices, insurance etc.

They sure do offer many different options. I'm hoping for just part time, but will see what's available.

When I got home from my trip around the world I did some temporary work that an employment agency found me. I worked in a behind the scenes bank work. It was really boring like counting cheques and putting them through a machine. I did meet some lovely people there, mostly students and other young people. There was some bad feeling because the bank had made its permanent employees redundant and then hired them in casual positions. Therefore some of them decided to leave that is why they needed so many temps. Then the agency found me a temporary position with an insurance company. The business wads getting too many telephone calls to handle so they needed a few temporary staff. I found that some of the working hours were tiring. I liked working 8am until 4pm but I hated working 12 noon to 8pm. The other temporary staff were friendly and their ages ranged from late teens to early sixties. Both of these jobs were full time and done to get money to begin my teacher training. I wouldn't have wanted them to lead to direct hire but this sort of thing often happens. Good luck with any temping that you do.

I think temp work gives you so much more flexibility, and you might find something there that you would never have considered otherwise. Thanks for the reply!

I have used a temporary agency in the past. I was always sent on accounting/finance assignments because that is my degree. It just so happens that every single assignment I was ever sent on offered me a full time position. I never accepted any of them because I was at a place in my life where I needed the flexiblity of temporary assignments. But I think it is a wise thing that companies do, hiring temporary workers to see if they are a good fit. I did it many times myself when I was in hiring positions.

Oops, I forgot one. I too was sent on an assignment in an accounting/billing dept. It worked out well, but was only temporary when they needed an extra body occasionally. I don't want full time work either, I don't know if I could handle it again and that's why I'm considering temp work once more. I can pick and choose (to a degree) what I'll take and when.

Yes I have! I am doing that now and I did it before my previous job. When I was working at a temp agency before my previous job I got placed twice one was a direct hire and the other was a temp to hire and I got both. The first was a District office clerk (I was dealing with contracts and deliveries.) The second one I was an Admin and was hired in two months. Now I am back doing it because I left that company. I was not an admin anymore I was a developer analyst. But now I am temping again as an Admin. I hope to get a job that is permanent that is not an admin job. What are you looking to do?

Yes temping is alot easier to pick and choose how many hours you want to work. Good luck to you and I hope that it goes the way you want it to.

I honestly don't know. I can do all sorts of office work, but I'm not sure that's what I want. And that would normally be a full time thing. I'm hoping for something just a few hours a day, a few days a week. I know beggars can't be choosers, but there are usually more options available in temp work.

When I was a nurses aid I use to work the pools all the time. The pay was so much better for that kind of work, if you worked for the pools. It was rare that I did not get the hours I wanted. Nursing homes are so often short staffed. I also agree that is was very nice to pick and choose my hours to suite my schedule. With the nursing homes though once you worked for the pools they could not hire you on permanent, until you had not worked in their home for 6 months. Plus I was never too sure just were they would send me all the time either. I could work 3 different nursing homes in a week. But other then those things I liked it, and at the time it brought in a nice income.

Well I hope you find just the right fit for you. I don't know if your close to a big city or not, but here in MPLS. they also have temp. services for the food service industrie, go cashier, serve, catering ect... not sure if you ever done that kind of work, but those are often just short little 4 hour shifts. Work great, if you don't mind the work. Again Marie Anne good luck.

After an extended stay in Hawaii, I returned to California right after the 1989 earthquake. I couldn't find a job in my field (escrow) so I went to a temp agency. My first job was working for an insurance company inputing earthquake claim info into a computer data base. I liked it. It was busy work. Then I got placed at a title company doing escrow work. That is my profession and after my temp contract expired I was hired. The real estate market took a dive in 1994 and I was laid off so I went back to temping. I did data entry and an administrative assistant job at the local university. I liked it. It's hard to get a job at the university so for me, this was an easy way in. When an opening came up at a title company I went back to that gig (far better salary and benefits). Got laid off again two years ago. I am disabled now and can't really do that sort of work anymore.

fayfun, I'm hoping to be able to find some part time work, not full hours every day, but I will just have to see what is available. Even if there's a full day position available for just a week or two at a time, that would be great. I could still take a break in between positions and it probably would work out for me.

msmargo, it sounds like temping worked out good for you. I'm hoping for much the same, but not full time. I don't know if I could go back to that, but I'll do whatever I need to do to pay the bills!

In the past, I have worked for temp agencies. I liked the flexibility of it. I could take long or short-term jobs. I got to see the inner workings of many companies. Some I thought I would like to work at but after spending a week there, I was glad that I didn't. There were a few companies that I loved so much and ended up taking a permanent job that they offered. It was fun.
