yes it is true, some criminals have been incarcerated so long and lack the skills to live in the outside world again, they get scared, they don't know how to to live on their own, the don't know how to run a house, pay a bill, get a girlfriend socialize and make friends and part of the reason for recidivism (going back to jail) is that they commit crimes on purpose just to get back to only home they ever known. you will learn the actual statues on line or any sociology university course on criminology, it is really eye opening to think about it. What do you think about it, do you see away to get long-term criminals (been in jail for at least 10 years) to become productive citizens on the outside again?

Yes I think it is possible for them to be productive members of society again. For that to happen I think there need to be a lot more focus on rehabiltation while they are in jail. Just locking people up for years will create hatred and socially inept people that are extremely likely to comit new crimes.

I believe this, I think they just get so used to having everything done for them, they get told what time to get up, what time to eat, what to eat, I think their brain would probably go into a non-active mode, a lazy mode perhaps, I don't know there is anything that can be done about it as if you give them a more normal life then they are not really being punished, i think sometimes they get it too good as it is...just my opinion....

I agree with you that long time criminals will have a hard time adjusting to life outside of prison walls. I don't see a way other than some serious counseling once released (or better yet prior to being released)on how to cope with a society that has gone on without them. I've heard of people purposely committing crimes to return to jail. They lose their comfort zone, feeling open and vulnerable.

That is so true what you said about criminals having a hard time on the outside. But, I also wonder if some of that is what got them in jail in the first place. I think they already had a problem doing what most people consider normal activities of living such as getting jobs and paying bills. Many criminals have problems with socialization before they are arrested for the first time. I don't know why, but I think there needs to be more preventative measures taken to keep people out of jail in the first place.

some places have government programs other places don't I guess it all comes down to money and you know how governments are with that, they don't like to dish out money, I am sure there are other reasons too but I do not know what they are

I think they can become productive citizens. I think that they need to be taught in prison what to expect when they get out. Kind of like schooling teenagers and preparing them for the age of 18. You really need to give these guys or girls support on how to live outside prison

oh this is totally true. my dad worked in the correctional system for almost all his working life and he knew of crimminals that did a crime just so they would have somewhere warm to sleep...some people just don't know how to function 'on the outside' because all they know is prison life.

We cant judge a person what he can potentially do.. if they under go some training once their freed i think they will change a lot . Giving them another chance to live outside and see what happens.. I know they will change coz they already know how hard to be lock up in years decades inside manipulated by people inside and how they were treated .

not all criminals are the same , sure prison isnt a cake walk , but some take their time better than others , i think only a select few can only handle the outside life , those other who been in for decades and dont know anything else ..ehh its just a wrap for them basicaly

yes, there is a way to get criminals to get out and stay out of jail.if the prisons would teach them the skills they need while they are incarcerated that would do the trick.the problem is that if a person is doing 5 to 10 years society just gives up.
