I got to tell you, this has been some night. Some of you may remember my terrorizing stories about me and mice (terrorizing to me anyway). Well this morning I was awakened at 4am by a tapping sound. I thought someone was trying to break into my house. I went out into the hallway and looked towards the downstairs. I saw and heard nothing so went back to bed. A few minutes later I heard the tapping sound again. I went through the whole house - had to in order to get the phone which was in the basement! I wanted it with me in case I had to call 911.
I told my family about my story. My girls decided to investigate earlier this evening. They freaked out when they heard not a tapping sound, but a clawing sound behind my bedroom wall. I called DH at work which was useless, so I called a neighbour. He came over and assessed the situation banging on walls as he went (the sound had stopped). My house is a 4-level side-split therefore the attic is separated in two (I didn't know this), hence the two different trap door entries - the entry to the lower attic is in my younger daughter's closet wall; the entry to the upper attic is in the ceiling of my older daughter's closet. I went outside and saw that it pretty much made sense. I went around to the backyard and saw a racoon go running up the tree. So I knew the racoon was out of our attic.
I had called my daughter's soccer coach from last summer. After all his company, a pest control company, sponsored the team. He told me the best thing was to throw a bunch of moth balls up there and that would repel the racoon. Okay, so who was going to do that?!
We called on other neighbours who had no moth balls, and were also freaked out. One of these guys is a volunteer police officer. I caved, missed the beginning of Big Brother and went to Walmart and bought the biggest box of moth balls. I got out the rubber gloves and very slowly opened the trap door in my daughter's closet. I peered in (had to make sure the racoon hadn't returned), even got a flashlight and looked around (I was praying there were no dead mice up there!) and then just threw handfuls of moth balls as far as I could into the attic. DH will have to go on the roof tomorrow and find out where that sucker got in. My kids still won't sleep in their rooms tonight though.
But I did it! I got balls!

Gosh, I will be scared out of my wits if that happens to me. I dont have pets because I am scared of them, even dogs and especially cats, the small ones, it gives me goosebumps just looking at it. I would see chipmunks in our backyard every now and then but that's all about it. And when I heard strange sound in our bedroom recently, my hubby put a mouse trap and when I heard that it snapped, I knew it caught something, I called my hubby and never went back in the bedroom until I was sure he already got rid of whatever it was. It was a mole he said. But just thinking about it, in my mind, I still have goosebumps. You are indeed brave.

Just remember, with mice where there is one there is usually four.
Word has it that this was probably a pregnant racoon looking for a place to have her babies and then once delivered would stay put for four months. Better to get rid of her now.

Ha! You got balls alright, moth balls!!!
When I lived with my great-grandmother, we had raccoons in the roof and chimney. They would get in there and scratch all night sometimes. When the upstairs bathroom wall dry-rotted and fell in around the faucet, they would come into the bathroom when no one was in there. Surprisingly, I was never scared of them, even though there was one time when I surprised one in the tub! I just hated having to clean the tub of the little footprints they would leave before I used it.
If I would have known about the moth balls back then, I would have thrown some in that hole in the tub. At least I wouldn't have to clean an otherwise "clean" tub before I got in it.

I never heard anything last night so I assume the moth balls have worked. Time will tell I guess.
We had a racoon in our chimney (when I was a teenager or younger) and we actually set up a guard rail leading out the front door, kind of like a pathway) so that the racoon would go out the front door. But from what the Pest Control guy said, racoons can literally climb brick walls. *shiver* Scary stuff.

Yup! Mom's got balls... moth balls!
Wanna come and chase the critters out of my attic and crawl space?

Thoroughly enjoyed your story, especially opening the door to throw the mothballs in. I had squirrels and tried the mothball routine. BUT, when I opened the access door in the attic, the squirrel was right there. I screamed at the top of my lungs and slammed the door shut. My husband had to throw the moth balls in later on, I was done and I'm sure the squirrel was traumatized as well. I hope this ends your extra tenant.

Oh Gawd! I would have hated that! I hate squirrels too. My parents had their share of squirrels in their house.
I made dang sure that racoon was out of the house before I did this (saw her run up a tree). DH found the hole today and has boarded it up. Hopefully not trapping anything inside. With that strong stench of moth balls I doubt she returned. Even humans hate the smell.

I tried to explain to my kids that they are afraid of us and won't come near humans.
Frankly, I don't really care whether he/she finds another home, though I am sure she will. My house was not built as an ark. I do not want to listen to their scratchings all night long. I have every right to rid my home of unwanted rodents.

We had one visit last year and it scared my fish. I had to chase it out of one of the ponds. My husband teased me afterwards, as here is this little animal and this big woman chasing it. Sadly, lost a lot of fish, but it hasn't returned thank goodness.
