Recently, I signed up for alerts from the government site. But I do not remember giving them my Yahoo e-mail address, nor did I give them any identifying information. I just went to check my e-mail and there was one that claimed to be from the IRS. I really could not tell, so I clicked on it. It said that I was due a refund. Now I do not usually fall for this kind of thing, but it looked so real. At the bottom in the background of the e-mail it said Copyright 2007 Internal Revenue Service. I clicked on it and it said that the site had some how been tagged for phishing. I panicked and have just started a virus scan on my computer. I admit that I do not know much about these terms and this is the first time that I have run in to something like this and fell for it. I do not believe that there was any damage done to my computer. But now, I would like to understand better what these terms mean.

My suggestiong for the future. Even if it looks legit doesn't mean that it is. Most times it would be a scam. One way I have found if things are really are not is having https://.... the "s" meaning secure site. If you are wanting to know more call them and find out. They usually do know the scams that are going on and then if they don't they have become aware of such scam circulating. Phishing - is the act of tricking someone into giving them confidential information or tricking them into doing something that they normally wouldn't do

I do not like the idea that someone has tried to trick me out of my personal information. I should have known better. Why would the IRS contact me by e-mail anyway. And use an address that I only use for junk on top of that. Well I had gotten a litte cocky about not being easily tricked. I know better now and I better be careful.

There are many many people who have fallen for this scam. Think of it this way if someone like the IRS, the bank, CIA etc will not have your email and usually would contact you over the phone. But even by phone is a little iffy. If you ever come up with it again call them directly. Usually there is a name or something and ask for that person. If that person is not there tell the person you are talking to everything on that information and see what they can do about it. Good luck hope you don't get it again.

Phishing is just a fancy new way of spelling fishing, except that it is almost exclusively an internet term. They are phishing for personal information and usually not by companies that are legitamate. Phishing emails are responsible for a lot of identity theft over the last few years, and unfortunately, this problem is on the rise. If you recieve emails that you don't feel are right, then you should just delete them.

You don't need to be worried with a virus from a phishing email. As long as you don't give out any of your information, such as social security number or bank information you're fine. The IRS doesn't ever send emails asking for information, neither does a lot of banks, etc..If you think the email is legitimate log into the site yourself, not through the email link. A lot of people fall scam to phishing emails everyday. I don't know what the exact number is but I'm sure its pretty high.

I am happy to know that I am not alone in this lesson and that there is likely no virus on my computer from it. I will be very alert from now on. Thank you.

I think phishing emails are scams that are sent to try and get sensitive personal information from you or your computer. I wouldn't trust any emails that come through like that and if you need to check, to actually type in the address in the address bar and search that way. Don't go through the email.

Phishing should be known as an offence and everyone should learn this term. Trying to steal one's internal or personal details is an offfence and technolgy should be able to find out the people who is doing this and law should be placed to punish such criminals. Also, paypal or any other money paying websites should be having a very strong firewall to prevent this offence. The best way to escape from this PHISHING is typing the home address and then entering our login details. So please dont open any links to websites from an unknown person. This may be related to a online trading website or bank website or finance website. Be very careful when you are trading online or banking online. Start fresh from a new browser and close the browser once you are done. Also, don't browse in a public browsing centres for online banking or online trading, as there are many softwares available in the market to store your username and password. Prevention is better than cure. So act smart by preventing to be caught in a phishing net.
