I recently heard my friend saying that tomato affects our kidney system. He also says that it does not go along with our digestive system, what do you people think about that. Should i believ in my friend and reduce my intake of tomato or these are just assumptions without any scientific backing.

Tomato is safer for health - Tomatoes are one of the most tasty and nutritious fruits available for our everyday diets. Extensive research around the world has shown the benefits of eating tomato based foods on a regular basis. Tomatoes are a major and one of the only dietary sources of the anti-oxidant lycopene, an agent that amongst other things has been found to reduce the risk of a number of cancers. This includes (but is not limited to) prostate, lung, stomach, pancreatic, cervical, colorectal, oral and esophageal forms of this disease. Research has also shown that tomatoes may help in reducing circulatory problems of the heart, brain and elsewhere.
I have never heard anything like this for tomato. Infact in India we say that tomato is very healthy for health. Tomatoes are one of the most tasty and nutritious fruits available for our everyday diets. This research has shown that tomatoes help to prevent blood clots from forming in the bloodstream – similar to the activity of aspirin. Tomatoes are an excellent source of, vitamin A, vitamin C, beta-carotene, potassium, folic acid and other B vitamins, iron and fiber. Interestingly enough, the lycopene in cooked and processed tomatoes is more readily available and absorbed by our bodies than in raw tomatoes. The benefits of eating tomatoes can be seen by looking at what is found in a single serving of tomatoes (148g) contains: Calories 35 Calories from Fat 0 % of Daily Value*Total Fat 0.5 g 1%Saturated Fat 0g 0%Cholesterol 0g 0%Sodium 5mg 0%Total Carbohydrate 7g 2%Dietary Fiber 1g 4%Sugars 4g Protein 1g Potassium 360mg 10%Vitamin A 20%Vitamin C 40%Calcium 2%Iron 2% *Percent Daily Values are based on a 2,000 calorie diet.

i completely agree wid u . when i was in college i had studies about tomatoes . they contain lycopene which is an antioxidant which helps in reducing the toxic cells in our bodies. Also here in india we use tomatoes for all the basic recipes & also in salads. Also many people just have it raw widout any seasoning . It also helps in reducing weight as it has more fibre which is bulky. BUt sad enough i just hate tomatoes. I dun know whenever i try to eat a raw tomato i feel pukish , however i dont mind them if they r mixed in my meal & are not clearly visible.

At one time tomatoes were thought to be poison because they belong to the nightshade family of plants. It wasn't popular as a food until the 19th century. It was popular in Europe as a ornamental plant. But the leaves do contain toxic alkaloids which are poison. Eggplant, bell peppers, and white potatoes are also from the nightshade family. tomatoes are an excellent source for Vitamins C, A, K.

Processed tomatos eaten in excess, like ketchup, bolognaise sauces, too much pizza with tomato bases, that type of thing, eaten in excess can cause digestive problems. Heartburn is common if eating processed tomatos while overweight. But eating fresh tomatoes does not seem to cause heartburn.

I think your friend doesnt have his facts straight. Tomatos are very good and very healthy for your body. They will do no harm. There aren't many veggies that can do harm to your body if you eat them in excess. Enjoy those tomatos!

Eating anything too much is always harmful. Have balance diet. Tomatoes have anti oxidents so it helps your skin. If anyone having kidney problems then thay should have restrictions on tomatoes as well as spinach etc.

I have never heard any bad benefits that a tomato can give to your health. All I have heard so far is that it is full of mineral and it has high level of anti oxidants that is good for the body. Another thing that is good in this fruit is the essential mineral, Lycopene. It is said to help your heart and makes it healthy. I love eating tomatoes, for me it has helped me stay fit.
