I think both are processes and both can become events. It's upto the doer how he reacts to success or failure. If he is complacent after a success , then he might fail in the next venture. Thus , success to him would be an event .Similarly, every story of failure and success materialize through a series of actions or inactions and hence even failure is a process , much like success.
What I think can turn success into a process and not just an event is perseverance.Perseverance isn't just planning , but taking action and revising the plan of action if the first one fails. They say one should keep the eyes on the larger picture .This is probably because when you have the eyes set on the bigger goal , the small bumps won't deter you from taking action.Perseverance to me is much like the previous comment used the word commitment.Of course success would also depend on how good the plan is , but one who perseveres and keeps attempting different routes inspite of failures is bound to taste success.

Vision, courage and conviction. The ability to take risks. The ability to demonstrate commitment to change, not simply demanding it from others.
