So many of us are running around trying to keep up with life that we let ourselves go nutritionally. For many years I suffered with depression and I was hospitalized. I observed patients eating the comfort foods (CARBS-White Starches). These people went round and round and just plain did not get better. There was healthy food available, but they were never educated about diet.
When I left the hospital, I was on meds, which controlled my life.(never again) I was to see a Pshchologist, which upon my forgetting my appointment, belittled me, so needless to say, I never went back to him. I begun reading Prevention's vitamin guide, and made myself a list of what I thought I was lacking in. (we know our bodies better than anyone else) After suppliments awhile, I begun do better and that feeling of well being set in. I combined this with message therapy, and Spiritual counciling. Today, I take good vitamins, do Reiki, and Worhsip in church. There is always someone spiritual there to talk with. This is such different counciling than the Docs do. Prayer and love heal all ills.
What experiences have you had with alternative methods?

Though I am now on medication I do know that there are alternative methods that do work..Meditation, proper sleep, clean eating, yoga, spirituality should that be a part of ones life (not everyone is religious or spiritual), aromatherapy, colour therapy, counseling, art therapy and most of all CONQURING YOUR PAST...which of course is a VERY hard thing to do and the more there is to deal with the harder it is and longer it takes...
Why do I medicate when I know these things do work...Well they only work partially for me..I need my meds to keep myself balanced..the alternative methods enhance my life for the better and with me work with my meds but bottomline is without my medication things take a terrible turn for the worst for me.
As much as favouring alternative methods over medication probably does work wonders for some ppl, for others medication isnt optional for various reasons ranging from the degree of ones depression to chemical imbalances and other medical issues etc etc...For those who CAN conqure their depression WITHOUT meds though all the power to them!! thats the way to go

Thanks for commenting. I hope you continue on a path to feeling well. The past is very hard. We stuggle to let go but each day something touches us and brings up old issues. It is a lifetime of hurts, habits and hang ups. Each of us is different and that is why we have the choice of what works for us.

I tried to respond to you yesterday in a manner that would not be offensive or giving my opinion and mylot didn't put it in. I just want you to know that I appreciate your responding and that if you go back to my statement of researching for yourself either on line or in books. This is so helpful and it is a way of learning. Good luck and good wishes that you will find some help. Spiritual guidance has been very important in my life. Blessings
