Technical / SEO question for blog

Hi I have a blog set up on blogger.com to drive traffic to an ecommerce site, but I'm thinking that hosting the blog on the same domain is going to help with SEO a lot more.
Two things come to mind, you can situate the blog in two ways ( blog.domain.com or domain.com/blog ) and I was wondering if there are advantages or disadvantages of either; this I want to know before I set it up.
Also, how to create the actual blog! Any suggestions on this much appreciated. But, the first question also is very important!
Any help, thoughts or experiences are welcomed :-)
Simon.

I agree with the above, that have the same sites/blog may not mean more visits, as you can achieve that with links from any site on any domain with active promotion. As long as the domain names are the same, so that people remember, it might help (I have the same name for my blog and website and at social sites and forums: pcsourcepoint - maybe have a look at my Mylot profile).
Though you might need to promote your blog in directories (e.g. mybloglog, blogcatalog, blogengage, etc), forums (where you can leave a link). Many marketing blogs/sites also provide a free e-book to attract and retain visitors.
Maybe visit this site: Caroline Middlebrook/com/blog, of which she has a marketing blog associated with her com website, and helps promote it by providing pdf e-books. Her sight might indicate what you want, and provide ideas...

I would go with blog.sitename.com but that's just me - that way your urls will be shorter and have the blog titles in the link like blog.sitename.com/articletitle
that's a lot cleaner than www.sitename.com/blog/articletitle
good luck with your new blog!

Good point on the URL side of things, my main worry was SEO as nobody types long URLs in its all from links.
I have installed b2evolution blog script from the hosting cpanel (in Fantastico) and it has thrown it into domain.com/blog not blog.domain.com *shrug* I'll put some content on it and whatnot and see how it goes.
Thanks for the reply and the well wishes :-)

I don't think there's really much difference between blog.domain.com and domain.com/blog...
Check out this link about the domain and SEO - http://www.seo-gold.com/seo-tutorial/domain-name-choice
You can build your blog with some blog scripts or program yourself if you are familiar with HTML, PHP etc...or an easier way is to use existing blogging engines like blogger.com, wordpress.com, livejournal.com and port the blog to your new domain..
