Unknown numbers, don't you just hate those?!?

I think we get about 3-5 unknown number calls a week and they are becoming very annoying. I usually don't pick them up because their "unknown numbers" but decided to pick up one of these calls last week and low and behold it was my mum calling from New Zealand!!
It got me thinking, maybe these are overseas calls so I decided to pick them up everytime I see an "unknown number" on the caller ID. All 3 calls this week so far have been anonymous, meaning, no-one has been on the other line. I say "hello" about 4 times and they either hang up or I hang up because I get frustrated when no-one answers.
Does this ever happen to you? Is there a way where I can find out who these "unknown numbers" are? are they international calls? what can I do about them as they are becoming more frequent and most annoying?!?

Ni, it doesn't mean they are international calls. Most of the time they are just telemarketing calls.
But my daughter in Texas comes up "unknown" too. What really burns me up is there is no excuse for them to be unknown. I saw a report on TV about this a while back. Apparently the phone company gets a list of names/numbers on a regular basis, but they have to pay for them. It is only a few cents for every list so the expense for them is minimal to keep their lists updated. Now, since they charge me (and every other subscriber) an extra $10 a month to subscribe to caller ID, I believe they ought to pay that few cents regularly to keep updated information. To me, if you're going to charge for a service then provide the service. If a caller is unlisted then say "unlisted," not "unknown."

Thanks for sharing this information. I had no idea the phone companies bought the lists, I just never thought about it. It really burns me up, because, as you said, we pay an extra $10/month for this service and we aren't getting our $10 worth each month. With the prices constantly going up on my phone bill, you would think that the decent thing for them to do is provide the full service and spring for these lists... it's not like they're actually paying for it... we are!

I am getting unknown calls to my phone, 4 times a day, but I do not even get chance to pick it up, whoever is doing it only rings the phone twice! I have started taking a note of when it happens and it only happens when the kids and my hubby are out at school and work. It does not happen at weekends either, the kids broke up from school yesterday and I thought it would be interesting to see if it happened while they were at home, today so far it has only rung once, yet on a normal day it is 4 times??? So I do not know whether someone is playing funny with me or if its a fault or what it is but if it keeps happening I am going to phone the phone company and see if they can find out who it is.

Isn't that strange that it only happens when you're alone at home. I hope it's not a prank and that someone is not watching you and your home. I think you should call your phone company too. Sounds a little suspicious to me - hope you're able to find out what's happening!

We get alot of these calls and they are usually sale persons or telemarketers that can really be annoying, especially the ones that don't take no for an answer. Some of these calls are for companies in Australia (where I live) but the person calling is from India :S go figure!

Sounds like those calls are outsourced to places overseas. Go figure alright as when I dial a 1800 number for information like with our gas company, we get rerouted to someone overseas too - well that's what I think happens because it's always foreigners that answer it and then they don't understand me and I don't understand them sometimes. Now that's frustrating.

Why don't you try redialing them..Sometimes I get that and it says no number but when I try to redial it rings and sometimes it's the credit card company or maybe check on with your phone provider to let them check on this anonymous calls.

I don't know why I never did that LOL maybe I should next time. I am going to talk with our phone provider and get more details about unknown numbers because I was told by an earlier responder that there is a feature where those that call with an unknown number, cannot be connected unless their number is unblocked so I am going to check it out. Thanks for replying.

I don't give my cellphone number out to any company. I have still been getting a couple of calls to my cell. If I don't recognize the number, especially if it is a long distance call, I don't pick it up. I'm not wasting my minutes. LOL

I freakin hate them all together I used to get them at least once a day. But the difference is the numbers are showing up I just don't know them or the area code. Just the other day I got a call from a number that came up as Michigan and guess what it was??? It was a stupid person asking for my credit card number. The reason I don't like answering to numbers I don't know is because 90% of the time they are telemarketers or some scam. As far as I am concerned they don't even need me to talk to them at all.

LOL no doubt hey. I think these people that do this are complete retards or something. I know you can have a restriction put on your phone so that unknown numbers cannot call without making their number shown so you could try that.

LOL as if you would give a complete stranger your credit card details. Who do these people think we are? ... not to worry a few people have posted some options so I am going to see whether our phone company can help me out on this one.
Thanks for responding!

Many people block their numbers from caller IDs, not sure why, just that they do. Sometimes if a person's number is unlisted it doesn't come up either. I've also had 800 numbers that show "unknown". There might be a setting on your caller ID to fix some of this, but I think for the most part it just registers as "unknown" if it's blocked by the caller.
I usually let voice mail get it if it's an unknown, that way I can just call them back if it's important or delete it if it's not.

Yes, unknown number do trouble me, I try to store them in my mobile, so that next time when I receive an unknown call, I could immediately disconnect the call. But I think, we have no option but to take the calls, we never know who is on the other side.

In a million years, you would not believe that while I was reading this topic, I got just such a call. This one was for someone who lives in my building. Because my number is listed, they will call whoever comes up under this address and asked to speak to the person as if they live with me.
This is most annoying. The only reason I have my number listed is because I move around a lot. Anyway, my sister has a feature on her phone that she pays for every month. If you call her, you can not get through unless her Caller I.D.can identify who you are. You will get a message saying that you need to unblock your number and try your call again. I think that this may work well for you.

Oh really Rozie, I wonder what that feature is. I was thinking that maybe we should just disconnect our landline since we hardly use it or now that you have mentioned it, maybe I might just talk to our phone provider and see whether they have that unblock number feature as well. Thanks for that tip :)

Hello, they say misery loves company so let me join you! I get these type of phone calls all the time! Lately they are coming in on my cell phone which is even more annoying. I've gotten to the point that if its not a known number or local area code I just won't answer it. I cannot believe that telemarketers are calling on my cell phone. It makes me angry that these unsolicited calls get through when I'm a do not call list and have a private number. If you figure out a way to stop them let me know!

You can do a "call-block" or something. I can't remember the name of it but, if you pay a little extra on your bill each month, you can have a service added where, if it is an unknown number or private listing, anything or anyone that calls that doesn't have their number displayed will immediately get a recorded voice on the line that says this number has "privacy director" (yay, I remembered the name of it). Then it will instruct the caller to identify themselves by name, it will ring you and when you pick up, the automated voice will tell you, this is a call from "name" (this will be the recording of the person saying their own name in their own voice) and if you know that person than you can choose to answer or say "no" when the automated recorder asks you if you want to accept the call. That way, you will either know who called or, if they hang up, you won't be bothered.
I hope I explained this well! Sorry if it is confusing. It is a good feature!

all the time. the only advice I can give you is watch what websited you sign up for that ask you for your phone number. I did one free offer online that required my phone number, now I get 5-10 calls a week from unknown numbers and people telling me HEY YOUVE WON A FREE VACATION AND ALL THAT OTHER CRAP lol.

I stopped answering my home phone. lol I finally had it disconnected, no reason to pay for a home phone, when I don't use it. Reason UNKNOWN callers, WRONG numbers, TELEMARKETERS (yes I am on don't call list).
When we did pick them up, we use to pick up the receiver and say "you know it is illegal to call with an unknown name and number" and they would hang up. lol We never said hello.
Now I get calls for people who DON'T LIVE HERE! We have lived here almost 4 years and these people have never lived here, when you tell them that it is like they do not belive you!
They just don't get how annoying they are. I call it harrasement when they call everyday or twice a day.
Now I have a cell phone and the number is not listed, so I won't be bumbarded with calls on it
Good Luck with getting your problem straight

My husband and I were thinking of disconnecting the landline too. We also have one cellphone that I use for emergencies or if I need to get in touch with my hubby at work or home but that's about it. I do text family overseas with it too.
Hmm it might be something to look into as well as the other options that were mentioned above. Thanks icyorchid!

Hi disvachic :) We got another one about 9.15 last night "an unknown number" and my hubby said to pick it up so I did and guess who it was, our inlaws calling from New Zealand. I'm still going to look into seeing if I can get these numbers to show as per previous posts :)

Unknow number mean for me, that someone is calling from home. Since they call from europe , it never show any number, but just unkown call. But I know you are here talking about something different. I know I have soemtimes those calls too and they want either some donation or soemthing like that. I would just said I am not interested and hung up.

That's what got me thinking because I don't usually pick them up but when I did, it was my mom. She usually calls my cell phone so I didn't expect the unknown calls to be her. I might have a way around this as suggested by other posters, so thanks for responding laurika.

Yes it happens to me too. But since I depend on the phone so much for business, I have no other choice but to pick it up. Thus, even if I am annoyed, there really is nothing left for me to do but to pick it up and hope that it is a real business call. Mind you, these prank calls can sometimes be so annoying that we here once contemplated of reporting an incident to the phone company (that's how bad it was). Anyway, I feel for your grievance, but in the end, it will all boil down to one thing: just how much do you value the importance of that phone line to you, and what you think it does to your sense of connectivity. Now when you've answered that and weighed the pros and cons, then maybe you could opt for a change in number and such, so as to remedy your problem. Until then, well, I guess you just have to, as they say, grin and bear it. :)
