Do you live in a housing development with a homeowners association?
How does that work for you? do you find them too nosey and intrusive?
Do you have any freedoms with what you do in and around your home?
We chose to not go this route because they can tend to be cliquey and gossipy and real troublemakers. We did not wish to involve ourselves with that potential whether as victim or confidant.
have you had any troubles with your homeowners association or housing authority?

While I have not lived in a house that had a homeowners association my son has lived in such a community. We visited him and were astounded at all the rules and regulations. He wanted to put hardwood flooring in his den and dining room. He had to get the 'permission' of the HOA and they said 'no.' Their reasoning was that it might create too much noise for those who lived below him. There were only certain colors of draperies that were allowed and the list goes on and on. He knew this when he bought the home but it was all a new way of life for hubby and I to view! We are considering relocation to another part of our state and we want to downsize to a patio home or any type of one-level condominium, as we are unsure of the future with hubby's two total hips. We want no stairs and no outdoor maintenance. However, most of these type of homes are in 'communities' with HOAs...and we are really reluctant! Good discussion!

When we were buying our house in 1992 we made sure we didn't have a homeowners because they can be a pain. We have enough problems with some our troublemaking neighbor's, we certainly don't need anymore.
With my ex-husband, we lived in a townhouse community that had a homeowner's assocation. A year after we had been living there, we were being sued by the homeowner's association because we did not pay our pool dues. My first question was what pool? Didn't even know that there was one. Home owners assoc. said it was the previous owners responsibility to tell us, yeah right. Found the pool, in my opinion it was way, way too small for all the homes in the community. Think smaller than an apartment complex pool. We had no choice we had to pay because we had to be members, you didn't have a choice. Paid the dues, then our marriage fell apart. Hmmm
When we were looking at moving to South Carolina, a lot of the newer developments all have associations because the homes were in a gated community. So again, you have no choice you have to belong and pay.
