Does anyone remember stenography?

I took that in high school in 1971-72. I was really good at it! However, after a work-study program, I never used it again because executives began using dictaphones. I got really good at taking dictation from that, it was great because you could pause it at any time and catch up whereas, in stenography it was pretty much scramble to summarize and go on to the next sentence.
Stenography (shorthand) is to modern dictation as 78RPM records are to compact discs.
Does anyone here still know stenography? I find myself occasionally using some of it though I've forgotten most of it.

A while back I got a steno machine in an auction, I thought its was cool looking. I knew what it was, but, hey, I have enough trouble typing.
So I put it out on eBay, I have NEVER gotten so many questions on ANYTHING. Model, make, year, what's this button like, is it one of the ones that feels like *this*. I felt like I had fallen into another world, where secretaries took dictation instead of sending emails, it was all new to me. Of course, only one person won the auction, (and didn't pay all that much), but the 35 people I corresponded with were wonderful. It may seem like it's a lost art, but there are a LOT of people buying $7-$1200 machines, so they must be using it for something.
Makes me curious... y'know?

Sounds like a court reporter machine to me. I always wondered how those worked! I hope you made a profit? Spring is coming and I intend to work the yard sales for ebay stock, although with all the financial hardships this probably isn't the best time for resale.
The stenography I'm thinking of is writing, that's why they call those spiral bound notebooks half a page in size "stenographer's notebook"s. I worked hard to learn it and used it for a couple years but have forgotten it now. I can type as fast as someone can talk, so why bother?
Yep, secretaries used to open mail, take dictation for boss' letters, type and mail those letters, read and sort the mail, answer the phones, make and break appointments, and so many other things! It was a very busy job, and I loved it. It's a thing of the past now, though, with cell phones and computers doing so much of the work.

I learnt shorthand in the late 80's and used it every day in my first job, but then I changed jobs and wasn't required to use it and haven't used it since. I can still remember the basics but I don't use it now. I think I can type faster now than I could ever take shorthand. A job I had about 5 years ago, I had to type while my boss dictated letters and found it quite easy to keep up because I didn't have to worry much about mistakes as I would fix everything up when my boss had gone.
