With the economy rapidly falling, we are all trying to save money any way we can. Here is a tip that is easy to do and will save a lot of money when it comes to grocery shopping. Instead of purchaseing those commercial packages of instant Oatmeal, make your own for a fraction of the cost and it is even better because you can customize each packet.
INSTANT OATMEAL PACKETS
Makes 10 packets of Instant Oatmeal
To make individual instant packets:
Blend 1/2 cup of oats until powdery.
Into each of the 10 packets (perhaps individual reclosable sandwich bags), combine the following ingredients:
1/4 cup unpowdered oats 2 tbsp. powdered oats
1/8 tsp. salt 1 tsp. sugar (optional)
Close the top and store in a dry place.
Microwave directions for cooking:
Empty packet into microwavable bowl. Add 2/3 cup water or milk. Microwave on high about 1 1/2 minutes; stir.
Stove directions for cooking:
Empty packet into pan. Add 1/2 cup boiling water; cook and stir over heat until thickened.
It is so easy to make and the kids will love them. You will save money and everyone will be happy.

I would think it would be better to use re-useable plastic containers, the plastic bags do costs and will just end up in the landfill. Those small margarine containers would probably be perfect for storage.

This is a good idea. I never thought of making my own and my kids love those since they are so easy to fix. I will try this as I am really trying to cut back on expenses now.

i will keep this for later, but we don't buy a whole lot of instant oatmeal anyway. We just make our own quick oats, and I usually put a whole bunch of different toppings out. I let the kids put anything from jelly to fruit to chocolate chips in it. I'm amazed at the combinations they come up with.

I don't use the small packets anyway. They're too expensive and have things other than oatmeal in them.
To me it's just as easy to put a little oats in a bowl, add a bit of water and microwave for a minutes or so. I like to add just a bit of brown sugar to mine.
If I was in a hurry or had kids to get off to school, I might try this.
