I am about to move to another apartment. I feel I have so much things I never use. I have come to a conclusion to not longer save things I do not need or use anymore. So now I am about to through lot of them away when packing my belongings. I do not want to have to many things. How do you feel about things. Are you a materialist. Do you by stuff just because they seems nice or you just want to have it. I use to, but feel it is a wast of your hard working money. My mum said she could not through her things away, it would feel bad she says. But why keep things you do not use anymore, things that just are for keeps.

I totally agree with you! sometimes you have to get rid of things you dont use or need anymore.why not have a garage sale or donate your old things to charity?

it depends on the degree of materialism that a person may be. i've learned to sort the materials that i may need and cherish. when someone special gives me something, i cherish it for that person is special in my life. i am not a horder of things for i seen it come and go. my mom would hold on to things until one big typhoon swept it away especially when the sea water washed through our home. pictures of her family faded and were destroyed. items were looted during and after the typhoon. she was saving her hard earned item to give to her children. so i learn to save what i may need and use. the rest of the items, i will give to those who will need and cherish them more. yes, i keep things that are special given from someone special. but, i am noy materialistic for things come and go.

I have to say I have been a heavy materialist. Now I have changed values about what is important in life and materials are not in the head of my book. I am only going to have what I need and use. Nor or less. Thank you for responding, and welcome to mylot...hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Personally, I am a very sentimental person, and I try to keep as much souvenirs as possible. However, if you feel like it will be more of a burden, then I guess it's okay to sort things out. As they say, "one man's garbage is another man's treasure." I am sure the less fortunate will love to receive things you no longer need.

Hello janujennifer, welcome to mylot. Hope you will enjoy this site as much as I do. Well, I have been a materialist earlier in my life. However, as older I get, my values changing. There are so many people in the world who have no stuff at all. Putting my money on stuff you really do not need fells like wasting them. Instead, I keep them and use them for more fun stuff, things i can experience is far more better.

I must confess I am a bit of a hoarder. My husband and I don't by any means by things for the sake of it but we do end up with lots of odds and ends from somewhere and I hate to throw things away because it seems such a waste. It drives my husband crazy! But I have discovered a wonderful system supplied by Yahoo! Groups. It's called freecycle and I'm not certain it's available everywhere but basically you sign up for the group (free of charge) and then post all your unwanted items, free to a good home of course, that you just can't throw away. You can also collect things from others that you might use but they find they won't. You have to collect things yourself so its best if you stick with your own area but you also don't have to post anything because people collect from you too. My husband absolutely loves it. It means he doesn't have to put up with my clutter and I don't have to feel like I'm throwing away things that might be useful. Everybody wins, including my eight-month-old daughter who now has room to crawl in our flat.

I am with you on that. I am sentimental and do tend to have things for quiet a some time. I hate to have to go through a whole lot of junk when its time to move or to clean so I do my best to keep it at a minimal. I am not a clutter bug and really like to have things organized for easy access and attractiveness. With too much junk this is almost impossible.
