Do You Read Self-Help Books?

Are you interested in reading self-help books? Some of my friends think it's pathetic to read those books (but I secretly think that they might just be embarrassed to show interest). I do read self-help books, mostly on self-development or relationships. Not that I totally believe everything would work or I would turn into a better person after reading the books, but sometimes, I do think they give me some interesting insights which I might not be aware of.

I prefer to read self-help books and not fictional books. I agree with you that we can gain interesting insights which we might not be aware of as well as some valuable tips which we can apply.
Some self-help books which I like to read include the Dummies and Complete Idiots Series on Computers and Investments. Some people shy away from these books because they do not want to be seen as stupid. However, these self-help books are excellent sources of good knowledge and tips.
I had personally gained a lot from reading them and will highly recommend them to those who are willing to learn.

Yes I love the Dummies and the Complete Idiot Series too! I read one about beauty and skin care and I find that very informative!

Some time ago I bought a booked called SAS Survial Handbook by John 'Lofty' Wiseman. Although it is a "handbook", but it's so thick Although I haven't a plan to go to travel to a dangerous jungle place, but I am interested in it. Perhaps it will be useful for me one day. Who knows?

So it's basically a survival book? Interesting! Well, it's hard to say, maybe it will be useful to you someday since everyone doesn't know how the world will turn out in like 40/50 years.

I do read a few self help books. I have read Purpose Driven Life and now reading Facing Your Giants which deals with helping you deal with the stress and tough things in life. When I was younger I read the Chicken Soup books and still love picking one up every now and then.

Absolutely I read them, and I should write one, too, lol, but although many are filled with garbage, many are truly wonderful and life-changing. Of course some people do not want to change. They are happy with the ruts they have put themselves int.
I am pretty happy with the way things are, but how I am is always learning, always changing. That is the only thing about me that I'm unwilling to change! There is nothing wrong with continually striving to be better. Some of the books are silly and some are great, but to put down a whole category of information is truly pathetic. Perhpas these closed-minded friends will evolve, and if not, maybe it is time to move on and find smarter friends. :-)

Yes actually I find it quite fun to read them from time to time and I think they are actually the books I would re-read. I agree that some of them are the most absolute junk in the world, so usually I use a great deal of time to pick and research a good and fun one, so as not to disappoint myself.

I read self-help books quite often. Some of each book is helpful and you're right, some of it may not be (it's hard to write a book that goes with every person's situation), but it's worth looking into.

I'm a psychology major and I do read self help books a lot, I do believe it helps me a lot of things, it made me realize things that I do not before, It helps me too see the world on different perspective. it helps me to be a broad minded person, I do not read it just for my self but for all the people I know by giving advices to others (which I think it helps even a bit) actually I do recommend it to some of my friends I bought some and I let them borrow it, I can say that self help books really helps....

Yeah.. I do read self help books. They are really helping if u follow their advice (but dont follow it blindly, Because they are generic in nature and u hv to use ur logic to take whatever u want ). And u said people think its pathetic to read self-help book . For me its like reading how to swim and actually going n swimming . There is lot of difference and we have to overcome this.

Hello wondericequeen,
I don't read self help books. I don't have passion for it. I know that we can get valuable info sometimes but to start reading it, makes me really feel sleepy. I don't know why... I tried many times to read this kind of stuff but ended up falling asleep and couldn't even remember what I really read about before.

yes. i read some self-help books. They are my favorite books actually, instead bible and other religious books. Its not pathetic. For me, reading such kind of books, showing that your personality is wanna learn to be better. You wanna improve your life as something precious, and how to manage it better. Nobody's perfect, but we are human, we has freedom to be better or worse. Learn and learn to improve our quality of life is better than doing nothing. We should learn more about life... Reading self improvement books, makes me more wiser to live with others...

I've read almost all types of books and self-help books are indeed helpful and written in layman's terms for easier comprehension. When I had my first baby at 19, my mom wasn't there, not even my grandmom and my in-laws were here to guide me so I don't have any other choice but to seek book's help.
When my grandmom was diagnosed with diabetes milletus, its easier to understand self-help books than those medical books that are laden with technical terms.
