Croup AGAIN!

Well yesterday we made it through Easter dinner, my almost 3 year old went down for his nap, and so s/o and I headed home leaving him and the 5 year old there with their cousins and everybody else, MIL was going to bring them home later. Then not long after getting here, we got the phone call that Evy had woken up and could barely breathe so they were taking him to the ER. I rushed off, leaving the baby here with s/o. They got him right in and were giving him a breathing treatment by the time I got there. That helped a lot. They started him on an antibiotic and gave him a dose of prednisone before they let him go home. His chest x-ray "looked like croup". He's still coughing but not as bad so I'm just trying to keep him somewhat calm and quiet today. He doesn't feel like eating but is drinking a lot of fluids so that's good. Now we just have to hope the baby doesn't get it too!

He's a little better today. His cough isn't nearly as tight and he has some energy. It was pretty scary driving to the hospital not knowing for sure what was wrong with him...and out here that's more than a half hour drive. I kind of felt guilty for leaving him at his aunt's since he was sleeping but now I'm so glad I did because she lives only 10 minutes from the hospital at the most.

If there is, I don't know how! I think it's like other childhood illnesses...wash hands, sanitize toys, and try to keep them from coughing on each other. Both little ones are coughing a lot today, so... I can't wait til summer.

Yes, it was good his was at his Aunts who was close to the hospital..And I know what you mean by being far from the a hospital, we live 45 miles away, so I am always thinking of what would happen if my child got really hurt of sick and even worse, my husband wasn't home and he has the only car.. Well I am glad to hear he is doing better..I don't know much about croup, is there any way to prevent it?

Wow, that sounds scary. My kids have never had croup. I hope he starts feeling better soon and that the other kids don't end up with it.

He's doing better. The baby got it also but I think we're through the worst of it. He had a rough night but woke up sounding pretty good.

I see you said Croup again; so I take it this is a repeat of something he already had? What concerns me here is my neice has two boys and a couple of years ago the youngest kept getting "Croup", turned out it was no Croup at all, she had been taking him to the ER, and because of lack of time, money, Physicians? He was being misdiagnosed. He actually had RSV, that just kept getting worse, and as it turned out his brother who was almost 4 had it too, which they said was highly unusual because of his age, that normally no child over 3 usually gets it. I am not trying to scare you, but I would seek another opinion, esp. if this is a continuation.

Well, yes it's somewhat of a continuation...Both my youngest two had it back in October (that was the baby's first time ever) and then they both had a mild case back in mid-February, and now they both have it again. Anf thanks for the information, it's not scary to me since I'm kind of used to respiratory problems with my boys... my oldest also had a lot of trouble when he was little too and was misdiagnosed as having croup when he was really having an allergy induced asthma attack. It's still scary at that moment when they are having trouble breathing but everything else is getting routine. They'll both be going to their primary doctor so we'll she what she has to say about it too.

When my daughter had croup this time last year I thought she was choking on something the sound was gut-wrenching, it sounded like she had a deflatedballoon in her wind-pipe kind of a harsh rattly type cough that made her reach & be sick. It was terrifying so we called a Ambulance & they took her off with my wife to hospital.. at the time we didn't know what was wrong with her but we later found out it was croup. A week later our son had it! at least we knew what it was that time round but it's a horrible thing to go through if you're not prepared or know what it is - I know how you must have felt! They were both fine after a week on anti-biotics like yours but they were also off there food for a while too but we were told that was probably the anti-biotics putting them off their food.

It is a horrible sound! When the baby had it in October, his breathing was so raspy that my now 5 year old said "Mommy, Nicky is purring!" It was cute but not so cute at the same time. That was his first time with it so I suspected that's what it was but it was still scary because he was only 11 months old and none of the other kids had ever had it that bad...he went downhill fast, a slight cough around midnight to wheezing and gasping for breath by the time I got him to the doctor's office at 10am. I think what scared me yesterday was that I wasn't there to hear it. I just got a phone call saying he was having trouble breathing and had no idea why. I was so relieved when I walked into the exam room and saw him sitting on the bed getting a treatment! I think if it happens again I'm going to find out if their insurance will cover an in home nebulizer since both of these too seem to have respiratory problems a lot.
