Is your work making you put on weight?

I watched on the today (news) show this morning, they had a discussion on, does your work make your put on weight? Well they actually said the word fat, but I don't like to use that word. I can understand in some jobs you are sitting down all day, such as a computer programmer, secretary etc, therefore you are not very active during the day and that could make you put on weight if you eat lots too. Before I had my baby three weeks ago I was a teacher and I would say my work does not make me put on weight as I am on my feet all day. Also usually we are taking the kids here there and everywhere around the school so I getting plenty of exercise. At the moment I am a stay at home mum, I have the advantage of breastfeeding which is helping me burn the kilojoules lol. But if I am not careful this kind of work could make me put on weight if I eat all day and watch television, but I have no intentions on doing that. So what is your work situation do you think it has made you put on weight? If so what is the reason?

hi kiran-its only a about 14mnths ago i was a supervisor cleaner it was hard work and very physical running all over the place and the weight dropped of me-infact i became a size 10 in clothes! due to my health and a few other things i had to stop now i'm at home i still get plenty of execise but not as much as what i used to and have put a stone on i dont know what that is in kilos-so yes staying at home i hate to say seems to put on weight unless you are one of the lucky ones who just burn calories off!! littleowl

That would have been very tiring and I can see how you would have lost alot of weight, size 10 is good. I am size 12 at the moment, can't wait to get back into my size 10 clothes, nearly there. Not sure how much a stone is in kilograms, we use kilograms over here. Good that you are still exercising, what type of exercise do you do? I am just using the treadmill at the moment, but soon I am going to join a cycling club. Thanks for your repsonse, littleowl.

Hello there, you raise a public concern subject. As I work in the office from 9 to 6, I notice my waist is gradually ‘getting bigger’ although I am quite a slender person. The sizes of my skirts and trousers are getting tighter every year. Frankly, I have already watched out what I eat and do a bit of exercise daily, but it doesn’t seem working ideally. Some friends said it is due to my age has turned 41, which is reasonably to put on a bit of weight. But I think it mainly is due to the office work that I have to sit down in front of the computer at least 7 hours a day.

Hi Madona, yes it would be bit worrying working in office all day long. I gues you could do little things like every half hour or so going for walk to bubbler etc, park car further away from work, take stairs if there is any. On lunch break you could take a walk to shop. It would be hard, some people at my work are so keen they go for walks in their lunchtime and they are already on their feet all day with teaching. (I am not that eager though). Thanks for your response.

Hello dear, many thanks for your concern. It is true I can do a bit of exercise to improve the current situation. Since my office is on the 5th floor, I have made up my mind to walk up the stairs rather than taking the lift; I will stretch a bit during my break as well.

Hi subha, what is an SW professional do? Good to sit in aircon all day that is definately a plus. Maybe you could go for walks in luch time or take extra walks to toilet or to get a drink to get little bit of activity. Hey I heard even chewing gum burns some extra kilojules, lol.

Yesh, i think somehow working has made me put on weight... I eat when im stress... I eat when im bored... I eat and eat and eat non stop when im at work... Occassionally, me and my colleagues, we order fast food, pizza and those fattening food.. Besides that, most of the time in office, we sit down.. Thus eat and sit, it contributes greatly to my tummy... Sobz... Also, during work... I eat, bt i get lazy to exercise after working coz im tired... So got home, eat and sleep... My life's much of a piggyish unbanlance lifestyle... Keke...

5 kilos is not too bad in three years, I am sure with the jogging you will soon shed those unwanted kilograms in a few weeks particularly if you don't eat too much. It would be hard working in office all day, not getting much activity. Can't believe your mum called you fat, that is not very nice. You could park further away each day, each little bit helps. Thanks for your response.

unfortunately my work is one of those kinds which makes me put more weight since i sit in front of a computer for more than 8 hours a day and this really makes my belly fat. i'm afraid my slacks won't fit me as days pass by :)

My work does not make me put on weight, I work for the forestry service as a seasonal firefighter. Which also means we are off December - mid- March, however, during those months I exercise everyday, which is mostly indoors. I can't afford to just sit around and gain weight during my off time, that would make it hard on me when I went back to work, since it is physically demanding.
