I have tons of mylotting to do but I have a sore back so I layed back for awhile, and when I do that I think, I was thinking about the internet and how some may terms have to with water or fishing. first of all the internet is often referred to a sea of knowledge, we must navigate through the net, another nautical term, even web, and net can refer to fishing gear, we also surf the net like we surf the waves on the ocean, do you think these terms are deliberate or just an access, can you think of other words also refer to water and the net? oh I just thought of one, phishing sound like fishing meaning to steal ones work on the internet, and of course internet pirates

You mean Phishing ??? It is the act of tricking someone into giving them confidential information or tricking them into doing something that they normally wouldn’t do or shouldn’t do. For example: sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. Identity theft is the name of the game. If someone can get vital authentication information, that person may be able to access another's bank accounts, charge accounts or credit information. In 1998, Congress passed the Identity Theft and Assumption Deterrence Act, which made identity theft a federal crime subject to as many as 15 years in prison. Still, identity theft flourishes, and one easy and increasingly popular way of capturing personal data is called phishing. Phishing isn't really new -- it's a type of scam that has been around for years and in fact predates computers.

okay, didn't know it predates but I do know it applies to writing and I am a professional writer and when you work is copied or taken from another site it is also called phishing, in my industry.

OMG-- I never once thought of this-- until I just read it-- It's true... I wonder why everything does kind of go with the water and oceans and seas. Too cool. I wonder if when people were making up these terms to go with the net-- if they thought about it!

i hadn't really thought of it, but you're right about certain terms seeming to have to do with water and fishing. I think it's more to do with a comparisson than with water. Surfing- spontanious travel without maps or routes, sometimes choppy if the waves get high, not knowing where you'll end up phishing- just as you said, like ishing, baiting your hook (like the phony bank and Paypal e-mails do to so many) and catching information (passpords etc, if people fall for it) Sea- sea's full of unknowns, and a place of travel without roads.

I hope your back is feeling better now. I surf the internet and think of surfboards. I think of the phishing as actual fishing LOL. I think of the net like an actual net itself used for fishing. When I think about cyberspace, I think of outspace.

This discussion just made think about it. LOL. Yes, terminologies are seemingly a wide array of sea or ocean related terms. Well, the internet is a very wide and vast source of knowledge indeed. I was just thinking, maybe , it's the reason that 3/4 of the earth is composed of water. Then that's how vast the internet can be in terms of knowledge that different living things have shared. We cannot measure how wide it is, so maybe it was termed 'sea', indicating it's vastness.. Just my loud guess!

It is really rampant this days... In music, film or book etc... Virtually all can be stolen from your grip...
