They say it's Mac. Since most of the population use Windows and seldom uses Mac, hackers or those who creates viruses focuses on programs that will run on windows since they have a wider scope. If they'll create a destruction or a virus they want to infect a lot of users and Mac don't have that much.

Any system can be very very secure. Yes, Microsoft based OS's do have more virus because its so widely used. The only reason that Windows is not secure is because of the USER! Do not always log in as the administrator (which most people do). Linux based os's usually discourage the user to not log in using the administrator ( or root user) to do normal day to day stuff.
the bottom line. any operating system is safe... just depends on the person behind the wheel. Just play it smart and you should be fine with any OS.

When it comes to securtity I think that the Windows Vista is the best one since for the least task you must accept at least two times like for:
Copying Files to the local disk
Deleting Files from the Local Disk
And by the way many of the programs must run in Adminastrator mode or they won't be fully functional or don't work at all. Well at least this is my openion:)

I am also using Windows XP.
But coming to security purpose, I think Linux is more secure than Windows.
