i have a very annoying habit during sleeping at nights (not during daylights). it's a shame to admit but my teeth keep clenching and make sounds so noisy. this is an unconscious habit. my husband couldn't stand it and very often he wears ear cover. i tried to look for solutions and found out that the medical term for it is bruxism. and no solutions ever to this bad habit. now in my effort to reduce my bruxism, i try to have good quality of sleep, take a nap once in a while. it works.
do you have habit during sleeping that you are unconsciously doing it? please share. thank you.

My boyfriend tells me if i sleep on a couch i snore. Not loud annoying snores but "quiet girlie snores" I've never caught myself snoring..and he says if i fall asleep in the bed...i dont snore so it must be something to do with how i'm laying on the couch.
I am aware that i roll over alot when i sleep..and i steal the blankets as well.

Usually I talk during the sleep :) my boyfriend always tell what I said last night :) but mostly I talk in non-existent language :)
Jofeli, if your teeth keep clenching and make sounds noisy you have problem with sleep and it's not good, so go to the doctor.. my friend had the same problem like you do, so she consulted a doctor and now everything is ok :)

I believe the non-technical term is grinding your teeth. And, you might be able to find a soft mouth guard at your local grocery store where they sell dental products. You really just need to protect your teeth. Even if you don't stop doing it, a mouth guard will help protect the enamel and your gumline. Trust me, that kind of wear and tear on your teeth can cause you to have to have many root canals. My dad has had several in his life. I have had one. It isn't so much a painful procedure but a long (at least 6 hours in the chair spread out over several days) and expensive one. So, consider getting a mouth guard to just insure that on those nights that you do grind your teeth, they are protected from damage.
I do it too and have only put off getting a mouth guard for no other reason than stupidity! LOL!
I also toss and turn at night. Especially if I have had any caffeine later than my morning latte or have eaten anything later than 8 pm.

My pleasure and, I am glad I could help. And, you may have only temporarily stopped. I tend to do it certain times of the month more than others. I don't know if it is something that can be stopped permanently. I am not sure. I know that my Dad has ground his teeth all his life. And, I don't know but, it may be hereditary.
I hope you have stopped your problem permanently! That would be great for you!
I plan on getting a mouth guard this weekend when the hubby and I do our grocery shopping.
Good luck! Protect those teeth!

I have a problem with clenching and grinding my teeth at night too. I purchsed a mouth peice at Walmart on the toothpaste isle that you mold to your mouth. It was 18 dollars and you boil water for a few minutes and then you drop it in pull it out let it cool and you form it to fit your mouth. I stays put ans its not too noticable.

I know someone who clenches his teeth when he is sleeping - my brother! hehe
Anyways, you are right, its called bruxism and it can actually cause serious damage to your oral structures, you just need to yeah, maybe have a bit of nap before you have your actual sleep... im glad its working for you. My brother was able to stop this habit of his when he got married. Whenever he sleeps with us, and i would check on him - he's not doing it as much as he used to. He's changed into a healthy diet too.. maybe it is one factor that helped him.

Actually, Jofeli --
There IS something that you can to to stop the noise.
You must get a "bite plate". it inserts i nthe roof of your mouth, and will prevent your teeth from coming into contact with each other.
Dentists and Orthodontists usually can get them for you, especially if you tell them that you have a history of bruxism.
Another important thing to do is to RELAX. Bruxism is a symptom of a stressful life. If you have troubles, I recommend talking them out with a professional, or at least sharing them here. It will ease your troubles, and perhaps give you a few good ideas!
Please see this page under "Treatments":

Yes, I do this too. I started at about 7 years old and my dentist gave me a horrible, thick retainer to wear at night. I wore it until I outgrew it and the problem seemed to go away, but it has returned nearly 20 years later. My husband hates it. Right now it seems to occur when I'm overly tired or stressed. I also catch myself keeping my teeth clenched tightly when I'm awake.

Nope! Snoring is all that goes on here. SOunds like this Bruxism may also effect the health of your teeth. And possibly jaw problems as well. May want to ask a dentist if the napping thing stops working. Glad you found a solution.

Hello jofeli,
I too have a habit during sleeping at nights - not bruxism but snoring. My husband told me that it was very noisy but he is tolerating it. I use some nasal drops under the prescription of a doctor - but still I snore according to my husband and children.
All the best.

hi jofeli! in our town in the philippines, clenching your teeth while sleeping is a bad omen that someone you know will die. a funny belief, huh? lol.. thats why, what we usually do when we know someone whos like you, we get a slipper and slap it on her/his face while he/she is doing that, to end the curse. lol..

Wow that's horrible.. I don't know if there's belief like that. I once had this habit during childhood and disappeared when I grew older. I don't know what's the cause to re-appear, probably because i have lack of sleep. If I should be slapped, then my cheeks will hurt everyday. I don't think I could stand it :) thx for sharing though, an amusing respond for me... :)

hi-five to you, i've got the same problem. my partner can't stand it too. he'll try to massage my cheeks to stop the grinding. i've gotten myself a clench inhibitor and it works pretty well. it stops the grinding and so, stopped the wearing down of my teeth. it's important to see your dentist about this as it can really wear your teeth down. imagine all your teeth start to shorten. :o
