Isn't there a way to access the internet in a non hotspot without paying $60 a month from Verizon? I plan to visit family in an area that does not get DSL, (they have dial-up). My laptop easily picks up wireless signals, as does my cell phone, so why is it so expensive to get the net on my laptop?

They are right, just get an internet unlimited plan on your phone for the days you need it or do the monthly since I think Verizon has the 2nd cheapest rate. Then if your using an android phone or iphone 4s up, you can use your phone as a wifi hub :). I do that when I visit other countries because I know the internet price are very outrageous specially when your in a hotel. I would use a prepaid sim, do the monthly or weekly subscription and let my iphone 4s be the wifi hot spot for all my other wifi gadgets :)

I can only think about using a cellphone plan. Like a data bundle.

Yes, there is some other ways that you can try. For one, if you have an android powered smartphones, you may subscribe to certain internet plan for mobile phones. These plans can be cheaper than the monthly subscription for laptop internet. After subscribed to it, you can use your android smartphone as a hotspot itself and share the internet to your laptop. That is what I do sometimes and one of the plan is just 10 dollars for 30 days of internet.
