To those of you who ridicule those with faith

I am not a religious person but I am a spiritual person. I believe in god and have faith. I am so tired of seeing discussions of those who like to critize others who are religious or have faith. Why do you care what others believe? Are you trying to control the world? Control yourself and worry about yourself. Religious opposition has been going on for centuries. In the past, thousands of people (maybe more) were killed because of their religious beliefs. WHY?! Why are so many people ignorant? Why can't we just accept each others differences and respect each other? Is that so hard to do? It would be a much better place to live in, if we all RESPECTED each other!

Religious wars have killed more people than any other type of conflict combined. All of the Crusades were justified with religion- even when the actual motivation was money or power. I'm not overly critical of other religions, but I live in a part of the country that resents non-Christian influences. I see religious intolerance almost daily. I'm not a fan of most religions in general, but I choose to accept the followers of different faiths.

You're right. Religion has in fact killed more people than any other kind of human conflict combined. My professor in Philosophy of Religion once told us this. And this is one of the saddest concepts I've come to terms with in my entire life. But if this says something, it does not tell of the rightness or wrong-ness of religion. Religion is not the culprit. Religion is about relationship with God. It should make us more like the one we worship. We Catholics believe in a God characterized by communion and love. It calls us to be agents of communion, understanding, humility and love as well. Thus, it is sad to see that we Catholics do not live up to the faith we profess. But that is the power of religion; it makes us like God (in an acceptable sense). It empowers us to act according to the God we profess. It enables us to do impossible things - like forgiving those we find hard to forgive, loving those who persecute us, or giving what we ourselves need because we believe in a faith that our God will provide for what we cannot hope to be sufficient with. If it is not about religion, it merely tells us that humanity is the one at fault. We who claim to be equipped with the reason to be reasonable in our actions are the ones too often unreasonable in the way we deal with our fellows. We distinguish more than we tolerate. We find our differences more worth engaging in than what unites us. I am not sure if it lies way underneath our human instict. But I am pretty sure that because humanity has so tended to celebrate what makes one different from another, then the way we deal with our religion follows suit. I admire you for the respect with which you accord people coming from different strains of faith. You see, within Catholicism, there is a theology which aims at nurturing relations with other Christian communities and religions. We call it Ecumenism and inter-religious dialogue. It promotes respect and celebrates differences, rather than disdain them. It's a long way to go I am sure. Humanity is a race which learns fast on facts, but learns slow on values. But I do hope that we can get to a point when humanity will be enveloped with respect, patience and tolerance for all peoples who profess different faiths.

A good place to start would be with the zealots that constantly spam their beliefs in comments, not just here at mylot but all over the net.

Religious beliefs and faith are just individual choices. A non-believer could carry his own convictions .However it is derisive to question others' ways.

I agree with you on this, I am not a religious person either, although I believe in god, I do not practice my beliefs in a church or preach my beliefs to everyone else or disrespect theirs. I believe and do things in my own way.I have no problems with anyone elses beliefs and totally respect what everyone else does. But I guess there will always be religious opposition and the fallouts from it will carry on for centuries to come.

The problem for disrespect for religion is because we try to compete in the name of religion .Religion is something spiritual and emotional like love , how can one compare love relationships ? .Every religion has its pros and cons the best way to deal with it to absorb the good ones and ignore the bad ones .We must understand that humans created religions and Gods but the humanity inside us had been with us from our early existence . with regards www.chocolatesavy.com

I totally agree with you.Infact religions are like different paths leading to the same destination-the Almighty.Religion is just a means, a way, an approach.Every religion preaches the same--love your neighbours, help the needy etc., etc, without checking their religions ofcourse.Man hasn't brodened his outlook, attitude, he searches for god in the manuscripts, and tries to win him by waging war against others and killing innocent people in the name of religion. If this is what religion is then I can proudly say that I have no faith in religion. But I strongly believe that NO RELIGION IS GREATER THAN HUMANITY, and that god dwells in every one, no matter the religion.......whether you like it or not.

respect each other and live in harmony…it would take a lot of genetic twirling for the human race to stop competing with each other, doubting each, killing each other, scheming against each other, trying to impose self on others, duping each other and laughing at other’s expense. Sometimes I am actually surprised that we have managed to survive so many centuries inspite of no two groups ever seeing in the same direction. And religion! The less said about it the better. Without any disrespect to any religion or sect, I must say that I am better off without the blessings of people trying to act God. While I would never comment on anybody’s beliefs, in my opinion, the only religion should be humanity, the only God should be the one residing inside each person, the soul, the connection to the greater universe.

"Why can't we just accept each others differences and respect each other? Is that so hard to do?" Ah dont I just wish it were that way Sadly though, it really IS too hard for some ppl to just leave well enough alone and show respect...sickening really and in all honesty its ppl like that that are a complete and total disgrace to whatever religion they associate themselves with and to their religions higher power..

I have also wondered a lot why people who have no faith are interested in religious topics!! Weird isn't it? But looking at the number of people posting who claim they have no faith, you can say that atheism is becoming another 'religion' by itself, condemning and making fun of all faiths around them. It is just like the door-to-door preaching of religion. Only it is not door-to-door but discussion-to-discussion. . Some of them just state their beliefs and go on ignoring some comments by believers, but there are others who start discussions just for the sake of "enlightening" the fools called believers . It is these type of people that really make me mad. Whatever their religion, it would be nice if people just agreed to disagree and carry on with their own beliefs.

I agree with you! I believe every person is on the Path to God, and just where he/she should be, no matter what religion of faith they follow. Its not up to you or I to advise them. Religion has murdered Millions in the Name of God, but that is out of our hands. If someone is asking for advise its ok to help them. Otherwise live your own life and allow others to live theirs.

Well, we are same here. not religious, but spiritual connected to god.. it just hit me why there are people like these in the world... Like, when you are religious, surely you have encountered problems or trials,, where probably god helps you with.. just put it in a way where these people who mock faithful person as their trials.. if we learn to ignore them, then we just pass the test.. right?? :P

Religion issues are everywhere. I mean, look around us. People are confronting each other by the name of their religion. I think that those are coward people hiding behind their religion. In my country Indonesia these issues are getting more and more complicated. Majority usually win but I won't even care about that, as long as I can keep my faith.
