I love Yard and Garage Sales. I go every year to the ones around here and then they have one big one usually the first weekend of April that is called a city wide. I am cheap and I like to find great bargains. I buy toys, clothes, books, cd's, knickknacks and everything else I can find for a good buy.
Anyone do any yard or garage sales? Have you ever found anything worth more than what you thought? Did you get any good bargains?
Do you set up your own yard sale to sell unwanted stuff? If you do, how do you set up? Do you place an ad in the local paper? Do you make posters to hang on the telephone poles?

i absolutely LOVE garage sales, especially church ones, they seem to have the best stuff!
we have about 3 or so garage sales per year (all during the month of june) and the best bargain i have gotten at a yard sale was a bunch of antique (children's) blocks that i paid 75 cents for and checked out on ebay, someone was selling some similar for $10 (and that was quite awhile ago...)

I've never been to a church one. Maybe I should check out some of those as well. If I had the energy I would probably have several a year just to get rid of most of the stuff that doesn't get used as often as it should.

Not only do I love, love, love garage sales, I also love thrift stores! I am a big time bargain shopper!!! My husband, friends and other family members often make jokes about my frugal shopping, because I will buy things that I can't use but that I know that someone else can use, for example, if I go to a store or garage sale and find nice quality baby clothing for a very low price, I will buy them (my youngest child is 9..no babies here)..but come on, if it is a new outfit from the Gap with the tags still on it and I can get it for a couple of dollars, well of course I am going to purchase it, that is just too crazy not too, right??? Well at least I think so..lol
I have also had garage sales, but I prefer to just give my things away. I am not big into having a garage sale myself, if I have nice things that are still of decent quality, I would rather find someone who I know is needy and give it to them for free. Thanks for starting this conversation. Have a great day!

Thanks for your response. I also love going to the thrift stores and buying things really cheap. The one we have here donates the money to their church to help with utility expenses for the low income and elderly families. I also have to buy myself a teddy bear every time I am there because they all need a home.
As far as buying things you don't need, there are always people who are having babies or have small children and you can always give them as gifts. They don't have to know where you got them or how much you spent on them.
Also after I have a garage or yard sale I donate my stuff that's left over to either the thrift store or post it on Freecycle.

I haven't had a yard/garage sale in about 5 years, but I am planning a big one or maybe 2 this year.
I usually do pretty well, as I am situated on a 4 lane, although the speed limit is only 45 mph.
I usually put tables length wise in my long driveway all the way up to the garage. Then I hang the clothes on the garage door track.
I only have to put up big plywood signs at the end of my drive, and I get plenty of traffic, especially if it is warm outside.

You've got a great location to have a yard/garage sale then. I would love to live somewhere where I had lots of traffic. I usually end up selling a bunch of stuff the kids have out grown, old movies and playstation games, toys, and even some of my own knickknacks because I get to many of them. Glad to hear you do pretty good on them as well.

I like to go to yard sales. You can find some pretty good stuff at a really good price sometimes. I have never had my own garage sale. My sister and I had thought about having one this past summer, but we never got around to it. Maybe this year.

I love yard sales. I am so happy that I am on day shift this summer. Last summer I was still on evenings and didn't get off work til 11pm. It's hard to get up before 7am when you don't get to bed until midnight at the earliest. But this year, I will be at work. And we will go to yard sales with the individuals. Well, we will take them considering we have to drive them. I can't wait. I was just talking about this the other day.

I love to go garage sales/yard sales also. I have went the past few weekends because I have a baby on the way. Its a great way to get kids clothes/toys. Not to mention nursery furniture. I have never did one myself but my grandparents did when I was a kid. They just hung signs up on telephone poles.

I know how you feel about the nursery furniture. We were luck and even found a wooden crib for my infant son for $20. It's amazing the bargains you can find.

Oh I love yard sales. I dont think I have ever got a great deal on something but I do find nice things once in a while. Around here each town has a day in the summer. The whole town has a HUGE yard sale. Its nice to walk around with the kids and see what deals you can get. I always give them each 5$ and they can get something they want. I myself dont have yard sales. I never have enought to sell or anything worth selling. LOL! My boys are rough on things!
Why is a Yard sale called a Yard sale? Your not selling your yard! LOL
Why is a Garage sale called a garage sale? Your not selling the garage! LOL!
It should be called a Stuff sale! LOL!

I love yard sale hopping! As soon as the snow melts off the ground people are starting to put up their yard sales around here. I love them. My mother and I go to all the local ones, checking our newspaper to make sure we don't miss any. I personally am always looking for books, and furniture. I've gotten some really great deals. My mother usually shops through the clothes for younger kids, because my brother and sister are 5 and 8 and they play outside a lot and she doesn't want them to get their nice clothes dirty, so by buying old used clothes they have a chance to dirty something up that doesn't mean as much.
I personally don't do my own yard sales, but my little brother and sister did one day. They brought out all their old clothes and toys and set up right in the drive way. They made a little over $20, which is a lot for 2 children. They didn't set their prices high either. They were really excited, and used their earnings to buy ice cream for the family that day at the local ice cream shop.

Sadly, I cannot set up a yard sale of my own, but I do love to check out garage sales! It's a great place to find things at a reasonable price. I usually check if the yard sales are selling CDs or VCDs, and if I see something I don't own, I'd buy it.

I also love garage sales and yard sales. I like looking for good items that someone may not want. I also donate some items I have to my church for when they have a yard sale. I like helping out my church when I can.
