Where do you buy your books?

I want to know where you buy your books. I am always looking for new places to buy books inexpensively. I go to used bookstores a lot but they typically all have the same titles and authors, and not usually much in the way of new books.
So where do you go? Do you...
- Buy new in the store
- Buy new at online bookstores
- Used bookstores
- Amazon
- eBay
- Craigslist

I buy my books from second hand shops mainly, they have some brilliant books and only cost about 70p! Other than that I am in my local library so will have them from there, I have that many books on my bookshelf now that it has started to dip in the middle! So I have to stop buying them for a while until I can get rid of some.

Well I did go through them all and decided that I was going to just give them to charity shops, but then when it came down to it I could not do it. So I boxed some up and put them in a cupboard and then started putting the rest on ebay, they did not go on there either. So now I am just going to re read them all again and then decide that way which ones I will keep and which I will part with. But I know what you mean about being like old friends.

By boyfriend would totally not be cool with me getting another bookshelf, which sucks because now I have to stuff them in my closet, not very roomy in there.

I had to laugh at the image of your shelf dipping in the middle. I can total relate to that. But it is not easy for me to part with books. This may sound silly but they are like old friends to me. So a lot of my shelves are bowed and I have boxes full of books. That makes my wife crazy! Lol

I used to sell books on Ebay.. I always made sue they were all in great condition and described them properly. I have never had any complains. I have also bought books on Ebay and have always had good luck there. But since I refuse to buy or sell there anymore.. I have gone to thrift stores, library sales, yard sales etc you never know what you might find. If they are in good used condition.. I don't mind paying 25 cents to $1.00 versus $12-$15 bucks for a new one

Hello Dizzblnd,
If I may inquire, does your decision to swear off of Ebay have anything to do with the recent price increase? I have heard many sellers express the gamut of reactions to the new sellers fees. If I'm being too inquisitive, please feel free to ignore this inquiry. Thanks!

Thanks for the ideas Dizzblnd. I too am curious why you no longer use eBay.

We usually buy our books on vacation at the different bookstores we find when traveling. If there is something in particular we are looking for we will try ebay for used copies, but used bookstores are our favorites. We don't buy novels, though, just art books and history and that sort of thing.

The only books I have bought on eBay to date have been practical art books, and the condition was definitely used, but for my purposes, they were perfect and the price was good, too. A good example was J M Parramon's How To Draw Heads and Portraits, which I bought on eBay for around $8 USD with no tears or pages missing and although a bit faded, all pages were completely legible. An internet search today show the various editions ranging in price from $16 to $180. As I just wanted to read the book, not display it, I thought the eBay price was most attractive, and Parragon is so good and sometimes hard to find that he is a value at almost any price.
Hubby and I like old books and buy them for the content not the cocktail table value, though, so what we like may be different from most people.

I buy my books new from Walmart, Target and Barnes and Noble. I have also bought and sold books on half.com in the past.
When we lived in Mississippi we would frequently shop at Books A Million.
I love shopping for books! What I don't love is paying full price for a book to find it a couple weeks later on the bargain shelf!

Do you find a good selection at the secondhand stores in your area?

I like to go to off price sources for my books. I enjoy buying used books at library sales. Many of them are donated and aren't ex-library. You can sometimes get beautiful, brand new books for $1.00 or less. You can also find older, out-of-print, antiquarian books at these sales. Be prepared to get there early as the competition is fierce. I've also found good books at thrift stores, yard sales, and estate sales. If I want something specific, I usually purchase it online.

I am really not a book reader, I normally wait for the movie.. However my husband buys books from the book store... They aren't cheap that's for sure they almost like 20.00 a book, but these books are all collectors... He loves to read so I don't mind it at the least.. For my son though we buy his there or from book sales they have at school and even wal-mart when they are on sale... As long as I know he's going to read them than I will buy them.. I don't want books all over the house that have never been touched...

I don't buy many books, but when I do it's Barnes N' Noble. I don't like to spend $20 on a book though, so I look for the cheap ones. There used to be place around here called "Media Play." Yeah, I got some pretty good deals on some autobiographies. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $5. Of course, that stupid Wal-Mart Supercenter nearby put them out of business.

That's too bad about them going out of business. $5 per book is a great price.

Most of the time, I buy the books now in Ebay since it's much cheaper and I'm not after the "new" look of the book. As long as it's okay to read and the pages are still intact, I will go for it.
Before I discovered Ebay, I always buy the books in bookstores here in Manila.

I usually go to my local thrift stores first, because you can get some good books for under a dollar. I've also been lucky enough to actually find some new releases in thrift stores! Also, check your local library, because they might have a donation shop, ours does, and I get a lot of books from there as well, they are usually under a dollar also. I also buy books from Walmart, because they are cheaper than going to a bookstore. If I can't find it in those three places, I usually go onto Half.com, it's an affiliate of Ebay. If you buy 3 books from the same seller, you can pay under $10, and the books are sometimes brand new. Always check the users feedback before purchasing though, because they could just steal your money and never send the books, and I've had this problem before.
I hope this helped, and good luck and happy book shopping!

Thanks Jenni. Our library does not have a shop but they almost always have a few shelves devoted to discarded books. I do stop there regularly.
I have never tried Half.com. I will try that. Thanks for the tip.

I buy from stores and online. New, I buy from Amazon, Borders, Waterstones and supermarkets - which are usually the cheapest for chart paperbacks, and sometimes have really cheap books. I also buy second hand, usually from book fairs, where you van get books for very little.

I have not seen a book fair other than at my son's school. Do you have adult book fairs in the UK? (Opps I mean book fairs for adults not book fairs for adult books. Lol)

I agree with you about used books. I usually order from Amazon, go to Borders or a Waldens if there's something particular Im looking for. Just recently however, I was lucky to find a Borders Outlet store by one of the malls I go to. Every book in the sotre was $5 and under...my dream come true! Haha. But because it was an outlet, according to the sales clerk, all books were usually 18 months and older. Didnt stop me from spending $50 in a 1/2 hour though, hehe.

I usually go to Barnes and Noble but I don't "pay" for them. I go through another website, which doesn't pay cash,I get points for which I get B&N gifts certificates. I then can splurge on books I wouldn't normally get. I love reading so this works good. I do prefer cash though.
For the hard to find book I go to Alibris. I found a book just a couple months ago that I was look for for years.

Is the point based website you talk about raffled certificates? I would love to get points I don't have to raffle because I normally don't win and lose all my points.

Though shopping online is convenient, I am like you. I like to hold the book in my hands and read the Table of Contents.

I like to buy books from Amazon because the price is better. And the delivery is free of charge no matter how much you buy it. You can select your payment methods. If there is something wrong with the book, you can get refund or return. They give me a satisfactory service.

Well, just today I discovered a new place. I went into a local christian store but this one was much larger than the usual others and I couldn't believe all the books. I grew up in a small town and christianity was normal so I have been to stores like this alot when I was younger (my neighbor was our babysitter) but never do I remember all the books, and its not all just religious stuff. Like one i skimmed was about a doctor after a serial killer, or apocalyptic stuff. I do know Tim Lahaye did open a big door in the apocalyptic genre.
I went there because my daughter went to a b-day and one of the kids gave the birthday boy a toy that i thought was so cute, a superhero jesus and goliath doll, so thats how i ended up there. I will definately be coming back because there was a whole ROOM of clearance books and they were fiction, non-fiction, inspirational and nearly all of them were less than 10$, mostly $4.97-$6.97. I was surprised how modern the other books were too.
I used to spend 50$ a week on books from barnes and noble, borders express or borders but I learned alot about my local library. Theres the interlibrary loan and I found that I can borrow books from other SYSTEMS outside of the state if our library system doesnt have them. I am borrowing a book right now from a university and I get it for a whole month which is cool. I always request books I found in Barnes and Nobles (NEW too) that I dont want to spend $20 dollars for, Im about to request "Brain Rules," Im so into Neurobiology.
I do love ebay for the out-of-print books and vintage books and I LOVE old books from like the 30's, like my 1937 version 'The Trial' by Frank Kafka, unfortuantely it doesn't have the cover but I do not collect for the money value but more for just my own personal interest. I have a real old version of the Jungle Book, The Great Gatsby, I just like old books.
Ebay does have to do something about its shipping though, add some incentives like free shipping once a month, or if you buy 30$ you get free shipping, i WISH it was like overstock.com, too bad. Shipping is the worse part about buying books online, but Barnes and Nobles is great about that.

I love old books too. I love the way they feel and smell. I also feel like I am holding a piece of history in my hands. Sounds a little weird doesn't it? Lol.
But I think we need to have that perspective of books. They are history. They are slices of time that will be there for years to come. It is an insight for future generations to look back in time to see what our life, thoughts, knowledge and attitudes were.
I think I'm gushing...

Great point. That is a great atmosphere. It's the combination of a library and coffee shop. When I am in those types of bookstores I love the feel of them but I rarely have the time to sit and enjoy looking through books and enjoying a cup of coffee. I am a bit jealous.
