American literature is a comparatively short but luxuriant one. Do you agree?

We all know that America is a country which does not have much of a history. However, there are many outstanding works. Today, I chose one of Washington Irving's works-- Rip Van Winkle to read. It is somewhat a myth. I was attracted by the story. The protagonist is a good-natured man but lazy. Furthermore, he is quite afraid of his wife. one day, after drinking the wine a passerby offers to him, he falls asleep and not wake up till 20 years later. Everything changes when he wake up. Have you ever read the interesting story? What can you learn from it? I'd like to share your view here. Will you?
