how to soup-up a laptop

i have a dell and want to know if anyone has ever deleted programs and made their laptop run better. I was thinking of getting one of those onecomputerperchild.com computers because you can manipulate the programming but don't know a thing on how to program, does any one know any good books, like a dummies guide?
