Ok, I have seen this movie a few years ago. It is very funny and it has a very different way of humor than the one we are used to see on North American movies.
Besides of the fact that it talks about how well the EU works, I believe is a little more than that. On this movie yes, you see students from the EU studying abroad, i believe it shows how college exchange programs work around the world!
On the movie they talk about the Erasmus program. I have to highlight that the Erasmus program is more popular in Europe but not exclusive from Europe.
Yes they do have some exaggerated moments and some maybe can be seem silly and unrealistic, but, I have been enrolled on programs studying abroad and maybe thats why it was so appealing to me. Pretty much everything that happens on the movie happened on real life. NO I'm not exaggerating!!!! I laughed soooo hard when I watched this movie. Ok yes it didn't happened exactly like in the movie, but it did happen either to me or the people around me.
For starters, they talk about the apartment and how they just kept stuffing more people in it. Well on real life 3 friends and I rented a house, but we started to have more house guests and ended up being our roommates sometimes.
They talk about cheating, specially the main character and how lonely he felt... oh don't even get me started on that one... on real life they cheat more than on the movie...
One of the characters annoyed everybody on the apartment... oh yes, I had a roommate that now I love but I he got us on our nerves...
Somebody get the news he is a daddy!!!... in reality... oh yeah we got that too, somebody got the news that he was going to be a daddy...
One of the very funny parts of the movie was trying to cover one of the girls lovers while the boyfriend was about to discover the cheating... well... I recall on real life distracting people, while helping to escape some friend's lover by the back door of a house...
At the end of the movie everybody felt close to everybody, it was like they were all a family and it was really sad to say goodbye and to move on... You have no idea how sad is that!!!! Those people become your family!! You might think you just get to know them on some level, but is deeper than anybody can imagine. Your life changes completely! And although when is over you might remain just being good friends and maybe keep in touch once in a while because everybody has moved on including you... you returned home as a different person. You might even change completely your goals and your priorities, just like it happens with the main character. Xavier continues his experiences and his funny adventures on a sequel movie called Russian Puppets. I haven't seen that movie yet but I understand is about what is next in life on a non student age. Well, I should try to get that movie and watch it too, now that I'm about the same age as Xavier and also wonder about whats the sequel on real life.
