I had to cut my reply short and hit submit...

Or I would have gone off on a tangent, attacking the person who started the discussion - as well as some of the people who replied to it. OK, it was a controversial topic, and I should know better than to even reply. But, I did keep it short and tried not to be too judgemental - as I thought some of the others were being. I know most of us do try to stay away from these topics, but if you do get drawn in, do you try your best to stay pleasant? Or do you go for the jugular?

I try hard to be pleasant but sometimes...there's just no point. I will do as you did and just cut my response short depending on how bad it's getting but other times I just can't help myself...this usually happens when someone is being so narrowminded and spouting off things that really make them look like a complete hypocrite. I admit to doing that yesterday on a controversial topic. There were alot of positive replies but one user was attacking most of us so I was already on edge and then a second person chimed in under my response and it was the last straw...actually I responded to two controversial ones yesterday so by that point I had had enough of judgemental narrow minded people.

Hmmm... I wonder if we were in the same one??? I had read every reply before I responded to this one and I just wanted to tell most of the people that they were really out there. I probably could have spouted off for a few pages, but then I would have been no better than they were.

Yeah, I really really wanted to tell them that they were just ignorant and would be the "real" cause of the problem because of their attitude. But I think I was dipolmatic...

I think we were. It was an unusual situation but not as horrible as some people were acting about it. Some of the comments made seemed really ignorant to me.

I can relate. Not in Mylot, but from another discussion boards. I'm a newbie here. Oh those days: Type...backspace...type....backspace...run around the house twice...stare at the monitor for a while. Go get a cup of coffee. Take a deep breath and focus. Then I sit and type back a wonderfully intelligent response that puts them in their place, while at the same time making others aware that I have my wits about me. You go straight for the jugular, but do it with class and intellect and you come out the good guy.

That's exactly what I've done before... Just sit back, re-evaluate, and stay calm. I'm all for adverse discussions, just not the people that fight about it all the time.

I recall letting one of those get to me once several months ago. I still can't go back into that thread as it makes my blood boil. I also avoid the person now, who was going out of his way to goat me. I feel like I lost the battle that day, because I let him get the better of me. It is usually best, for your own piece of mind, to walk away if you can. At times, that is much easier said than done though. That being said, sometimes they just have it coming. If you can't bypass it, just change the wording. Think of something really clever to throw them off the scent. Best trick in the book.

I try to stay pleasant, but sometimes I get attacked anyway. There are just some people out there who are waiting for you to say something they can twist around and use against you. You really have to be careful if you do not want to get into a flame war. It is better to just be respectful when you are replying. I think you did a good thing by cutting your answer short. You can always go back and add another comment after you have thought things through for a while.

You just reminded me of one time when I did put my 2 cents in, kept it short and didn't attack the poster. But, I got a nasty reply from someone else, and when I read their response I saw that we were agreeing. The person misread what I said and apologized, but it was pretty strange for a little while...

I try to stay calm and pretty much laugh at people who attack me. I know I will never get my point across if I stoop to their level and chances are, I would never get it across anyway. Some people will never change their minds no matter what I say or do so why even bother.

I don't always want to change their minds, but let them know that we all don't have the same ideas. That doesn't mean that either one of us is necessarily wrong...

I know. And I should stay away from the, but sometimes I feel like I just need to let the person know they have different views than other people and that doesn't make the rest of us wrong.

I think that you should just give it up. When you are dealing with people like that, they make it hard for you to make a statement. So I would just say just to make sure you do not worry about it. They are going to look stupid, when you be the bigger person, and let them do their own thing.

There are a lot of times I'll do just that and let it go. But for some unknown reason (well, I might know) there are times (like once a month) that I just have to say something. I just try not to get all nasty about it and stay on topic.

Yes, I always do my best to keep it short and simple. Besides, putting out a long response would only make it look more complicated. If I know I have a good point to share, then I'd give that and make sure that what I want to state about the topic is delivered. Of course, I always put it in a nice way..

That's what I hope I did also. I just found that all of a sudden I felt like really telling them how I felt. And it just wasn't necessary.

I usually stay away as I can't be bothered getting into a pointless argument. On the rare occasions I do, I try and put my point across without getting riled as that is when you have lost and the other person has won. I think it is much better to stay pleasant as then the other person will be the one to look stupid. Going for the jugular just gets messy.

I am usually pretty diplomatic (or at least I try to be) but this one discussion yesterday really got to me and I just was having a hard time with the closed-mindedness of most of the responders. I am glad that I just said my peace and went on about my business.
