Do you think kids hit a wall in their first school term?

My 5 year old son is in week 9 of his first term at school, and he is tired, snappy, teary and just not his usual self. It is a small school, and he loves it there, and has got several certificates for his conduct, and his work. Yet when he gets home, he grouches around, forgets his manners, and gets really upset if things don't go according to what he says. He has a fortnight to go before there are two weeks holiday, and I'm hoping that will return things to normal. So what do you think? Do kids hit a certain point in their first year where they start to struggle?

Thanks, that is kind of what I'm hoping. It is really hard at times to be patient with him, but my wife and I do a pretty good job, I think. At least he still has a lot more good moments then bad!
