Now that the price of gasoline is sky high here (United States) and everywhere else, do you let your car engine warm up?
I remember my dad always told me to let the engine warm up before I drove a car. I always listened to him until now. I know that are gasoline prices don't even compare to a lot of places. But I cannot afford to let my engine warm up properly.
Do you? or Can you?

Hi Sherrir!
I observed that drivers really warmed up their cars. At first, I thought it is but a waste of gasoline, but later, I realized that warming it up, the driver can hear the sound of the engine and can detect if something is wrong or not. This way, warming an engine is a way of checking out important details of the machine in general.

Yeah. I agree with you on this subject. Gas prices are extremely high right now. It has something to do with managing the oil in the United States and the war in the Middle East itself. In the wintertime, I warm up my car before going anywhere. In Canada, I found out that gas prices are a lot higher up there than in the US.

You are right. The petroleum resource of the world is running short. Therefore, the effect the soaring price of gasoline. But I don't think warming up the engine will consume a significant amount of it. It's good for the engine in long term. But if you are not going to use your car for too long, or if you are planning to buy a new one, then it's not important wether you warm up your car before driving or not. . In fact I do not get used to warming up the car. It's only needed during the winter or for very old car. (just my guess :)

I think it is better for the engine to let the car warm up. Or so said my dad many years ago.

I don't usually let my car warm up for more than a minute or two. Seems like I am always on the run and in a rush. I do, though, listen to the engine sounds, in case there is a new noise that could be a problem. So far, no harm has come from getting in and just going....

I still let my car warm up because my husband says it is hard on the engine if you don't and I would rather pay a little more for gas than pay around $3000 for a new engine.

I do it because my late father did it and told me to 'always do this or you will be paying for a new engine'. I guess that I have always been scared of blowing an engine.

my father always told me to never let the engine idle, it was bad for the engine and also wastes energy... I have followed that advice for the most part - sometimes I will let the engine be on with the defroster blowing during the time that I am scraping ice off the windows.
most owner's manuals that I have seen say to not warm up the engine. though my husband always tells our son to do so... he is getting conflicting information from us.

I'll have to get out my owner's manual and see what it says.

My Car is a diesel so I never let it warm up unless we have had a frost and I ned to clear the windos. Being a diesel it is more tolerant of this abuse!
