Service pack two or to that matter any service is meant to cover up patchs. If you are having XP then you can have SP2 as add on no problem.

Updating to the new service pack 3 helps to provide more reliability and solve more vulnerabilities issues that may still exist on Windows XP SP2....It will always be good to update any patches from Microsoft...Same goes for SP1 for Vista which is due to be out very soon
You can find out what are the service pack 3 can offer at the Microsoft website - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=68C48DAD-BC34-40BE-8D85-6BB4F56F5110&displaylang=en
Scroll to the bottom and choose "Overview of Windows XP Service Pack 3.pdf" and download it....The PDF file should tell you about the Service Pack 3

I personally prefer to stay with SP2 or even upgrade further to Vista.
There's no point upgrading to something that is still inferior to Vista. SP2 has done well enough.
