Should Muslim women be punished after being raped?

This is a question that has been broached recently in a group I participate in. Under Islamic law, a woman who has been raped is often punished for having put herself in a position that allowed the rape to occur - in other words, she is blamed for letting herself be caught alone with the rapist(s) and thus permitting the crime to take place. If Mom tells me to not touch the hot stove, and I do, she doesn't whip me; she figures the burn is punishment enough. On the other hand, the stove did not intentionally burn me..and we can't punish it. Should women bear a part of the blame for a man's violence? Do we say the man would not have commited the crime but for the opportunity afforded him? I don't agree.

How warped is that? That is just another way of taking the blame off the man for his actions. I did not know this belief. Thanks for posting it.

This so-called law is EFFing rediculous. The least Islamic law could do, if that's the way they are going to ill-respect the bearers of their Muslim children ... is call it something other than rape. I find it extremely contradictory to place any blame for the violation of a woman on the woman herself ... and still call it rape! For Hell's sake ... This insanity is equal to that of giving a man (for lack of a better word right now) ... a license to violate a woman. "Sure ... go ahead ... not your fault!" "She shouldn't have been alone ... vulnerable." Dam ... she shouldn't have even been a woman!

If I am correct in my limited knowledge of the subject, I believe most Muslim and/or Islamic women dress quite modestly, even to the point of being completely covered. I have heard of women in other cultures being blamed because they supposedly dressed or acted enticingly to the rapist. But if the woman is dressed in the fashion of her culture, I wouldn't say she is very revealing in the Muslim culture, right? So, as others have said, this is just twisted. I don't know why it is that women in particular get blamed for being victimized, not just in rape but in any other kind of abuse. I have posted this in discussions before. When I was in counseling after my separation from my first husband, it took them a long time to get through to me that there is NO reason for a person to abuse another person mentally or physically and it was not my fault, nor was it anything I had done. I have heard men on talk shows say, "Well, she just aggravates me and I can't stand it anymore, and she should learn to leave me alone." Oh please... There is NO reason for one person (man, woman or child) to abuse another (man, woman or child). No excuse is valid.

Wow, I've heard of this before but I never got around to finding out if it was true. If this is true then I think we can all reasonably agree that this is madness. Of course it's not the woman's fault of being raped. Hence the term 'rape.'

What about women that rape men, Yes it does happen, you just don't hear about it. Would they punish the man who got rapped? No a rape against a person is a crime committed by the rapist and not the victim. Muslims are a male driven religion where women are basically just a piece of property. They sometimes even will kill a raped woman. To me they should castrate the men so that they do not have the urges to commit any more crimes against women. Yes I am a man who knows that women are just as important as men in this world.

No religion commanded acts mustbe over common sense. And a victim of rape, woman or man, is always, before anything else, a victim, not an agressor.

I think common sense and logic and compassion will tell anyone that this is a skewed muslim law and should be changed.

Yes I guess you are right, this kind of logic is somewhat wrong. Its like putting more injury to the victim. It also gives the perpetrator to do more of it since their victims will also be blamed for it anyway. That is such a harsh treatment for women to be put into such a situation where she became a victim of a crime and still is to be blamed by society for being a victim. That is such a lame logic.

I definitely do not agree with this thinking. It has been proved that a man before he even walks out his door already knows he is going to rape someone. He doesn't care who it is just that it is going to happen. This has been said by prisoners who they have interviewed that have raped a women and this is what they have said. What about the children that have been raped. What have they done for a man to do this to them. A women is not to blame for a man raping them. They didn't ask for it no matter how they are dressed. Look at the old women also who have been raped. Rape is a control issue that the man has. And that is why he does this.

This is difficult to understand. I don't think any woman wants to be raped. There are various reasons why one can land up is such a situation, but I don't see how woman can be faulted for having being raped. I wonder if Islamic theologian can redefine the law and come up with another interpretation, or else people will just consider it as a religion of madness.

I don't think that is fair. In the first place, a rapist would do everything if he really intends to harm someone. Not because Muslim women are covered would mean that they are no longer at risk of these maniacs. Did they choose to be left alone with the suspect? I don;t think any woman want that to happen. The rapist is to be blamed, that's what I believed in.

no women should not be punished for that. we can not help what a man has in there minds to do to us. now if we put ourselves around a whole bunch of men flirting and drinkin and caring on of that nature then when a guy asks certain questions we treat them badly and make them angry then what do u think is going to happen if they want somethn and we tell them no. they are wanting to get back at us for hurting there feelings. but in a sense it is puttin themselves in that postion to start with we should not have done things like that. but if we are jus innocent by standers and someone happens to watch and follow us and things of that nature then no women should not be blamed we would be the victim in this case. well what exactly is done to the man who has raped them under islamic law? are they jus gone unpunished for there acts?

Yea well in some cases of rape in Islam, the woman has to have up to 6 MALE witnesses. No woman or child should ever be blamed for being raped.

so if a man breaks in while i'm sleeping, i'm to be held responsible for his raping me. thats false logic. it goes along with the idea that a woman 'asks' to be raped, also a falsehood. the man should be held responsible and the woman should be counseled.

i love that example of yours.. and about that rape thing, i agree with you, i think that women aren't the ones who should be blamed but the guy/s that raped her... i think that the islamic law should be changed because a lot of women are being raped and the one raping wouldn't get punished.. it's so unfair right?
